Warren visits Florida migrant shelter ahead of debate: Children being marched ‘like little prisoners’

Ahead of Wednesday night’s Democratic presidential debate, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) made a trip to a migrant detention center in Homestead, Florida. The detention center contains many unaccompanied youths who are captured at the border.

Warren said she was denied entry to the detention center despite her campaign putting in a request for the visit.

Actress Alyssa Milano was also visited the detention center on Wednesday and was denied entry. She and other protesters ended up climbing ladders to see into the detention center to yell messages of support to the detained youths. Warren did the same.

“There weren’t children playing. There weren’t children laughing the way children usually do when they’re moving from one place to another,” Warren told reporters following the visit. “These were children who were being marched like little soldiers ― like little prisoners ― from one place to another. This is not what we should be doing as a country.”

Check out footage of Warren talking about her visit below:

Warren is not the only Democrat to take an interest in the Florida detention center. Beto O’Rourke, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI), New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg have all promised to visit the center in the future.

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) visited the detention center on Monday.

Jane Sanders, wife of Bernie, also visited the center on Wednesday following Warren’s visit.

“Charmed” actress Milano said she was left “crying” after climbing a ladder and seeing into the facility.

The detention center reportedly houses about 2300 youths who were captured at the border and unaccompanied by parents. The youths range from age 13 to age 17.

“What is happening at Homestead to children, what is happening as the direct result of the activities of the United States government, is wrong. It is a stain on our country,” Warren told a crowd about the center. “We will stay here at Homestead until this facility releases these children and closes down.”

Warren’s visit was obviously a political move to get herself some attention ahead of Wednesday night’s debate in Miami. Warren is already at an advantage because she is polling the highest out of the 10 candidates chosen for the debate. She is actually the only one polling in the top five.

Besides Warren, the debate will include Beto O’Rourke, Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Julián Castro, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Tim Ryan (D-OH), John Delaney and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI).

On Thursday night 10 more Democrat candidates will debate. Among them will be top contenders like Joe Biden, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA).

The total list of candidates is Biden, Sanders, Harris, South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO), Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), John Hickenlooper, Eric Swalwell (D-CA), Marianne Williamson, and Andrew Yang.

Wednesday night’s debate moderators are NBC anchors Lester Holt, Savannah Guthrie, Rachel Maddow, Jose Diaz-Balart, and Chuck Todd.
