Shepard Smith gets choked up talking about border crisis: ‘We’ve always said yes…when did we stop?’

Shepard Smith has made it clear from the beginning of Donald Trump’s presidency that his views mostly don’t align with the president or many of Fox News’ more right-leaning hosts.

Smith tackled the border crisis on his program “Shepard Smith Reporting” on Wednesday and he had to fight back tears while talking. Smith made it clear he was not happy with the conditions detained illegal immigrants face in detention centers and he believes it should be much easier for people to come to the United States.

While interviewing Real Clear Politics Associate Editor A.B. Stoddard about the issue, Smith said, “the process of presenting yourself [at the border] has changed.”

“The process of presenting yourself has changed. The process now is lists are kept haphazardly. There’s no official lists in many cases. People are told it’s going to be a long time. At which point they go to migrant camps where the temperatures are over 100 degrees,” the Fox News host said.

He continued, “They’re not going back because it is horrendous where they came from. Through the history of this nation, we have seen give us your tired, your poor and your huddled masses. That’s what we’ve seen as a society to people who were in a position where they cannot or their children cannot survive.”

Smith then got choked up as he said, “We have always since the dawn of this nation said ‘come, we’ll figure this out.’ Since the dawn of this nation every time those communities have come here, they have made America better.”

Smith then lamented the fact that America used to “always” say “yes” to immigrants.

“We’ve always said yes,” he claimed.

He then added, “We have said if you’re — if your heart is in the right place and your idea is in the right place and you want to come be a part of this grand experiment, we want you here. When did we change that? How do we get the previous way back?”

Despite liberal politicians and the mainstream media constantly denying any crisis at the border since Trump took office, it is now all they can talk about. The script has been flipped because it’s politically convenient. We have gone from the cold shoulder on the issue from the left to them making it central to their agenda.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) even visited a migrant detention center in Homestead, Florida in the hours leading up to Wednesday night’s Democratic presidential debate. She was not allowed entry, but the senator climbed a ladder to look into the facility and she made it clear she was not happy with what she saw.

“There weren’t children playing. There weren’t children laughing the way children usually do when they’re moving from one place to another,” Warren told reporters following the visit. “These were children who were being marched like little soldiers ― like little prisoners ― from one place to another. This is not what we should be doing as a country.”
