Complaining that committee members are not letting him be “flexible,” Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., chairman of the House Oversight Committee, denounced the idea that opposing members were “talking past each other.”
“It just doesn’t make sense,” Cummings said. “As a matter of fact, it opens the door to problems.”
All of which prompts the question, has he been paying attention the two decades plus he has been in Congress?
Putting his foot down, albeit gently, he insisted that they go “strictly by the rules” — a novel concept for Democrats.
Once it was determined that Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, currently had the floor, the lawmaker lowered the boom.
“Following the rules is important, Mr. Chairman, that’s why the first issue raised in this committee hearing this morning was the fact that we didn’t follow the rules on the notice requirement raised by the gentleman from North Carolina,” Jordan said.
After the two thanked each other for agreeing to follow the rules, there was a pause.
Responding to the silence, Cummings asked, “Are you finished?”
“No, I’m thinking!” Jordan shot back somewhat sarcastically, prompting a hearty laugh from the chairman.
The laughter was infectious, as Jordan and other members began laughing as well.
“There’s so many things I want to respond to, I’m trying to prioritize,” the Republican lawmaker added.
Regaining his focus, Jordan pointed out that after an FBI investigation that would be handed over to special counsel Robert Mueller, an investigation that went on “for 32 months,” there was no conclusion that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia.
“But Democrats don’t want to ask the key question, why don’t we investigate how the false accusations began in the first place,” he said. “They don’t want to do that.”
Dead serious now, it’s safe to say Jordan wiped the smile from Cummings’ face as he pointed out that the chairman still wants to investigate the matter.
“But to say this administration hasn’t complied and given the Congress the middle finger, when [Trump] allowed his White House counsel to testify for 30 hours is just not accurate.”
