The Daily Beast published a report on Saturday that claims to identify the source of the viral “drunk” Nancy Pelosi speech that was in fact altered to show her slurring her words. Nothing like some crack investigative reporting to help rid the world of perps who subject the world to fake news. Oh wait … that may not be the angle that works best for liberal news outlets.
The viral video was tracked back to Shawn Brooks, a sports blogger and forklift driver from the Bronx, who initially posted a different, authentic clip of Pelosi stammering as she often does on his personal Facebook page. He asked in connection with that video, “Is Pelosi drunk?”
Minutes later, a different video of Pelosi that was stealthily edited, was added to a Facebook page called Politics WatchDog that Brooks operates, according to The Beast article. That video was doctored to slow her speech without lowering the pitch of her voice. In effect, it gives the appearance of the Speaker of the House being amusingly intoxicated. The video was widely shared, accumulating in excess of 4 million views.
The huge “exposé” by Daily Beast was said by some to be little more than the doxxing of a regular Joe who did a pretty amazing job of creating a viral video. But the charge of “doxxing” would be debatable, since Brooks willingly granted a lengthy interview to DB and pretty much admitted to much of the evidence pointing to him being the origin of the video.
After being contacted by Daily Beast (DB), Brooks admitted that he is involved in managing both Politics WatchDog and AllNews 24/7, the Facebook pages that hosted the original doctored video. The 34-year old claims that he is one of many who work on those sites, but Facebook told the publication that is false–he alone runs both.
According to Daily Beast, he does deny being responsible …
“I wasn’t the individual who created that Pelosi video,” he insisted in a telephone interview.
It’s conceivable that someone else actually edited the clip. But a Facebook official, confirming a Daily Beast investigation, said the video was first posted on Politics WatchDog directly from Brooks’ personal Facebook account.
A likely motivation for the creation of the doctored video was ad revenue. Brooks admitted that it brought in almost $1000 to his Paypal account before Facebook shut it down 36 hours after being posted when fact-checkers declared it to be fake.
Brooks speculated that Facebook left the video up for 36 hours before removing it because “It makes money for Facebook too. I’m sure that’s their motive for not taking it down.”
“We have zero interest in making money from fake news and our policy is to not allow people to make money from content that has been rated false by a fact-checker,” Facebook said in a statement.
The interview Brooks gave to the publication reportedly lasted an hour and a half, and he seems to have changed his story a bit as that time went on, according to DB. Oddly, Brooks said he has concerns about how some were easily were duped by the video.
In the obligatory demonization of the alleged video editor, author Kevin Poulsen wrote for his very liberal DB readership: “A review of Brooks’ personal fan page reveals him as an avowed conservative and a proud member of Trump’s razor-thin African-American support base. A couple of Brooks’ Instagram posts feature misogyny. The strongest example is a post last year featuring a photo he evidently snapped of a woman sitting next to him on the subway. ‘This dumb bitch sitting in front of me on the E-train continues to kick me without saying excuse me,’ he wrote.”
Strongest example? Wow.
Brooks does now have some things to be genuinely concerned about, and he admits it. “I’m in New York City,” he said. “Very liberal. People make judgments.” Still trying to redirect attention away from himself, he continued, “I just don’t want to be linked to a conservative right-winger and be potentially denied services and stuff … People are nasty. You should see some of the messages that are coming in.”
