Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Ben Carson has been the target of many attacks from the left in recent weeks over a new proposal his department put forth to help struggling American citizens find affordable housing.
Carson’s plan would strip public housing away from families that include one or more illegal immigrants. This would free up thousands of homes for struggling Americans who are on waiting lists to receive public housing benefits.
Speaking about the plan before the House Financial Services Committee, Democrats blasted Carson and said his plan would not free up enough housing to service the millions on the public housing waiting list, so it’s not worth doing. They also argued that displacing families that include illegal immigrants would also negatively affect tens of thousands of children.
Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) said, “Your plan to create vacancies by making 55,000 American children homeless is among the most damaging proposals I have ever seen.”
Carson stood his ground well and argued that the plan allows for families with children to defer being removed from their homes for up to a year and a half. This, he argued, gives Congress time to finally reach a solution on America’s illegal immigration problem, which he argued is mainly what’s negatively affecting children and American citizens seeking public housing.
“If in fact you want to explain to the American citizens who have been on the wait list for several years in your district in New York why we should continue to support families who are not here legally, I would be happy to join you in helping explain that to them,” Carson shot back at Mahoney at one point during his fiery testimony.
Carson’s words didn’t seem to matter much. Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-NY) even called his proposal “shameful” and “immoral.”

At least one HUD official is publicly defending Carson. In a new social media post, Lynne Patton showed that Carson critics have driven her to the edge with their attacks. She even said she may have broken the law with her latest post defending her boss.
Patton shared a post from the account @Education4Libs defending Carson’s plan and she wrote that she’s not sure if her defense is a violation of the Hatch Act.
“Just retweeted this amazing tweet from both of my Twitter accounts — professional and personal. It may be a Hatch Act violation. It may not be. Either way, I honestly don’t care anymore. These people are determined to try to ruin and discredit a good man,” she wrote.
The Hatch Act is a law that states that federal employees are not allowed to use their positions to engage in political fighting. It’s a loose law that can be defined and interpreted many different ways.
The post Patton retweeted defended Carson for a viral flub he made when he thought for a moment that a question involved the word “oreo” instead of the real estate term “REO.” It was a mistake that was quickly corrected, but Democrats seized on the flub while ignoring everything else the man said.

“I find it funny how liberals will laugh & mock Ben Carson for a simple miscommunication yet praise Ocasio-Cortez as if she’s a genius,” the retweeted post read. “One of them is a brain surgeon who separated conjoined twins at the heads & the other just figured out what a garbage disposal is. Case closed.”
