Impeachment of Donald Trump just became even more of a fantasy for Democrats as Senate Republicans promise bitter fight

Democrats’ hopes of impeaching President Donald Trump just became even more of a fantasy than they already were.

With more and more Democrats in Congress calling for the impeachment of the president, a number of Senate Republicans have vowed to quash any such articles should they ever become a reality.

Even if House Democrats manage to pass articles of impeachment, the next action will be in the hands of the Senate, which is majority Republican at the moment. In order for the president to actually be impeached, there would need to be 67 votes in favor of impeachment in the Senate, a number Democrats have no hope of securing. With 67 votes being a two-thirds majority of the Senate and the majority of the Senate being Republican, impeachment should be taken as just more empty rhetoric from Democrats.

Even so, talk of impeaching a president is a dangerous and serious thing, especially when it is coming from the mouths of multiple politicians. With more and more Democrats claiming the president is unfit for office, Senate Republicans have vowed to give a bitter fight if articles of impeachment reach their doorstep.

“I think it would be disposed of very quickly,” Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said, according to The Hill.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) would set the stage for an impeachment hearing should the House manage to actually back their words up with actions. McConnell would likely make the hearing swift and pointless.

“It would be defeated. That’s why all they [Democrats] want to do is talk about it,” said Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX). “They know what the outcome would be.”

“Why on earth would we give a platform to something that I judge as a purely political exercise?” added. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC). “We have to perform our constitutional duty, but if people think that we’re going to try and create a theater that could give you the perception that this is a matter that rises to the level of Watergate, that’s nonsense.”

The breakdown of the Senate is 53 Republicans to 47 Democrats. Even Senate Democrats are skeptical of impeachment ever becoming a reality.

“There are 47 Democrats. On a good day, even when the president is at his most outrageous level, only three Republican senators will publicly say so,” Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (Il) told The Hill.

While anyone with half a brain knows impeachment is a fantasy, Republican Senators dismissing the notion should quash any remaining hope for Democrats.

They have every reason to want a swift end to this nonsense too. The Mueller investigation wasted over two years and millions of taxpayer dollars and it came up with nothing. There was no evidence of the collusion President Donald Trump was originally accused of in the 2016 presidential election. Now, Democrats are hoping an obstruction of justice case can be made, but the Mueller report doesn’t swing either way on the matter and Attorney General William Barr has basically laughed off the idea of the president being impeached for allegedly obstructing an investigation into a crime that never occurred.

The next time a Democrat like Steve King of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez starts spouting off about impeachment, tune out. It’s nonsense and these new comments from Republican senators cement that. There is no future where the president is impeached. Democrats feel they have far more power in the matter than they actually do. Thank the Lord our founding fathers were smart enough to give us a government that keeps itself in check and never lets one greedy political party get too powerful.
