Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) has surprised many with his reaction to the Mueller report. Despite the investigation officially clearing President Donald Trump of collusion with Russia in the 2016 presidential election, Amash has publicly sided with many Democrats by saying he believes the report shows impeachable offenses made by the president.
“Contrary to Barr’s portrayal, Mueller’s report reveals that President Trump engaged in specific actions and a pattern of behavior that meets the threshold for impeachment,” Amash wrote in a recent tweet.
Amash said he believes that the report shows the president to be guilty of obstruction of justice, a position many Democrats have taken despite Attorney General William Barr disagreeing with the theory.
Amash said the report “identifies multiple examples of conduct satisfying all the elements of obstruction of justice, and undoubtedly any person who is not the president of the United States would be indicted based on such evidence.”
Amash has inspired a lot of controversy among conservatives and Republicans over his stance, including politicians who were previously seen as close allies.
Amash and Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) have often been written about together and they have both been viewed over the years as the leading Libertarian voices in the Senate and Congress. Both politicians are in sync on most of their policy decisions, but they can’t seem to find common ground on the Mueller report.
In a recent interview with The Huffington Post, Paul criticized Amash’s position and said a libertarian should be siding with the individual rather than the intelligence community in the wake of the release of the Mueller report.
“I actually think the libertarian position on the investigation is ― you know, libertarians, we’ve been very, very critical of the intelligence community having too much power, including congressman Amash has said, you know, really you should have to get a warrant before you get an American’s records,” Paul, who briefly ran for president in 2016, said.

Paul called the investigation the “antithesis of libertarianism.”
Amash has not been able to find many allies on the right when it comes to his impeachment remarks. Even the House Freedom Caucus voted to condemn the congressman’s words and Amash is a founding member of that group.
Amash could be facing more uphill battles in the future as his impeachment position has inspired someone to challenge him in his next primary.
Michigan State Rep. Jim Lower (R) announced this week that he will give a primary challenge to Amash.
In a public statement, Lower said Amash “must be replaced.”
“Congressman Justin Amash tweets yesterday calling for President Trump’s impeachment show how out of touch he is with the truth and how out of touch he is with people he represents,” he said. “He must be replaced and I am going to do it.”
Despite the backlash, Amash has stuck to his guns and reiterated his position multiple times.
“Some of the president’s actions were inherently corrupt. Other actions were corrupt—and therefore impeachable—because the president took them to serve his own interests,” the congressman wrote on Twitter on Thursday.
