Trump lashes out at Pelosi after fruitless meeting: ‘I don’t do coverups … get these phony investigations over with’

President Donald Trump made it clear while talking to gathered press in the White House Rose Garden on Wednesday that he is tired of the endless investigations into his administration being pushed by Democrats.

Trump’s impromptu presser came after he reportedly walked out of a meeting with Democrat lawmakers like Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) that was supposed to be about finding common ground on an infrastructure budget.

The meeting reportedly only lasted minutes with the president calling for an end to divisive investigations before moving forward on bipartisan policies. After the meeting, Democrats held their own press conference where they said some rather harsh things about the president and made empty statements about wanting both political parties to work together.

“It wasn’t really respectful of the Congress and the White House working together. He just took a pass,” Pelosi said at the press conference about Trump. “I pray for the president of the United States, and I pray for the United States of America.”

What’s strange about Pelosi’s statement is that she talks about “Congress and the White House working together,” but she had reportedly said earlier in the day in a meeting with Congressional Democrats that she believed the president was “engaged in a coverup.” Though Pelosi argued during the meeting that impeachment was not the best course of action for Democrats, there are plenty of other Democrat lawmakers talking about impeaching the president on a daily basis.

“I don’t know where this leaves us as a nation. We have so many things that have to be done for this country and they can’t be done unless we work together,” Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Il.) said at the press conference following the fiasco of a meeting at the White House.

Schumer called the meeting a “planned stunt.”

“He is looking for every excuse,” the senator said of the president.

He later added, “To watch what happened at the White House would make your jaw drop.”

Trump had his own shots to fire in his press conference. He even specifically responded to Pelosi’s “coverup” comment from earlier in the day.

“I don’t do cover-ups,” Trump said. The president was also open about how the meeting with Democrats went.

“I walked into the room and I told Senator Schumer, Speaker Pelosi [that] I want to do infrastructure, I want to do it more than you want to do it. I’d be really good at that. That’s what I do, but you know what? You can’t do it under these circumstances, so get these phony investigations over with,” the president said.

Democrats want to have it both ways. They want to accuse the president of criminal activity and keep fruitless, costly investigations going into things that have already been thoroughly investigated and then they want the president to smile and make the extra effort to ignore these comments and these investigations. If Democrats truly wanted bipartisanship then they would drop the publicity stunts and look to the future with the president and get some real work done.
