When a lawmaker aligns himself with Democrats, as Rep. Justin Amash, R-Mich., did this week in becoming the sole Republican on Capitol Hill to call for President Donald Trump’s impeachment, and is welcomed by the likes of Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., a primary challenger is blessed with riches.
After Amash called for impeachment — which may have been little more than a stunt to draw attention as the libertarian-minded lawmaker is reportedly toying with leaving the GOP to run against Trump as the Libertarian Party’s presidential candidate — Michigan state Rep. Jim Lower announced Monday that he plans to challenge Amash in 2020.
Appearing on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle,” Lower said Monday that Amash has “more in common” with Tlaib than with Republican voters.
“He doubled down on it today,” Lower said of the impeachment call. “He doubled down on the comment saying the Mueller report indicated [Trump] should be impeached. There is nobody besides Bob Mueller that would’ve liked to come out with that conclusion. Even he couldn’t come to that conclusion. It is completely ridiculous. At this point, Justin Amash has more in common with Rashida Tlaib than the average Republican primary voter in the district.”
Fresh off her controversial remarks about the Holocaust, Tlaib took to social media to urge Amash to sign a Democratic resolution to begin impeachment proceedings — the radical leftist is one of the first two Muslim women to be elected to Congress, the other being anti-Semitic Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn.
Lower, billed as a “pro-Trump” Republican, told Ingraham that he will hit Amash for being “ineffective” in his ten years in Congress.
“So we will beat him on this issue but also on the fact that in 10 years in Congress, he’s gotten one bill passed and it was renaming a post office,” he said. “Completely ineffective.”
“If you look, he’s the only Republican in Congress to vote against funding for the border wall and [he’s] very weak on immigration issues. Just basic pro-life issues too,” Lower added.
Amash is a fierce Trump critic and was talking impeachment two years ago. In May 2017, he co-sponsored a Democrat bill calling for an independent investigation into Russian involvement in the 2016 election.
He also joined with Democrats in February, co-sponsoring a joint resolution to block Trump‘s emergency declaration seeking additional funds for a border wall, and said Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh was a “disappointing pick” who would “take us backwards” on 4th Amendment issues.
And while Amash has already dismissed Lower as not being a serious challenger, his anti-Trump disposition assures that Lower can count on plenty of money from Trump supporters around the country, as he attested to during Monday’s interview with Ingraham.
