2020 contender and South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg appeared on Salem Radio Network’s “The Hugh Hewitt Show” on Friday and revealed that he thinks Thomas Jefferson’s name should be essentially scrubbed from the public eye.
“A very blunt question because you talk about going to every Jefferson-Jackson Dinner in Indiana when you were running statewide. Should Jefferson-Jackson dinners be renamed everywhere because both were holders of slaves?” asked Hewitt.
Buttigieg answered by saying Indiana is in the process of scrubbing Jefferson’s names from events and places.
“Yeah, we’re doing that in Indiana. I think it’s the right thing to do. You know, over time, you develop and evolve on the things you choose to honor. And I think we know enough, especially Jackson, you know, you just look at what basically amounts to genocide that happened here,” the Democrat, who is widely known as Mayor Pete, said.
He continued, “Jefferson’s more problematic. You know, there’s a lot to, of course, admire in his thinking and his philosophy. Then again, as you plunge into his writings, especially the notes on the state of Virginia, you know that he knew that slavery was wrong.”
The mayor then clarified that he does not want to see Jefferson’s name removed from history books or for him not to be recognized as a Founding Father, but he would not like to see anything named after the man.
“Now, we are all morally conflicted human beings. It’s not like we’re blotting him our of the history books or deleting him from being the founding fathers. But, naming something after somebody confers a certain amount of honor,” said Buttigieg.
He continued, “The real reason I think there is a lot of pressure on this is the relationship between the past and present that we’re finding in a million different ways that racism isn’t some curiosity out of the past that we’re embarrassed about but moved on from. It’s alive, it’s well, it’s hurting people and it’s one of the main reasons to be in politics today is to try to change or reverse the harms that went along with that. We better find ways to live out and honor that principle.”
While President Donald Trump is negotiating trade deals with China, trying to prevent war in Iran, trying to end conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, and introducing important reforms to this country’s immigration system, one of his 2020 challengers is talking about removing a Found Father’s name from some buildings because it might hurt a few feelings.
Buttigieg also went after Vice President Mike Pence during his interview.
“I don’t know what’s in his heart,” Buttigieg said of Pence, adding, “if you’re in public office and you advance homophobic policies, on some level it doesn’t matter whether you do that out of political calculation or whether you do it out of sincere belief.”
The mayor claimed Pence’s views and policies in regards to homosexuality are “hurting other people.”
Pence himself expressed surprise in a recent interview with Fox News over repeated attacks from Buttigieg since he said the two have shared a positive relationship over the years. The vice president refused to criticize Buttigieg though.
“If he wins their party’s nomination, we’ll have a lot more to say about him,” said Pence.
