CNN White House reporter Jim Acosta earned some serious backlash for a Thursday tweet that many felt completely misrepresented comments by President Donald Trump on immigration.
Speaking to the press in the White House Rose Garden, Trump announced a new proposal to reform America’s immigration system. Trump said he would not cut the amount of green cards given out each year, but he wanted the majority of the ones being given out to be based on merit rather than chance.
Trump acknowledged that America is still a “welcoming” country, but he said a lottery system is “contrary” to American values.
When covering Trump’s speech, Acosta manipulated Trump’s words and made it seem like the president said something that he never actually did.
“Trump in Rose Garden speech paints asylum seekers with broad brush accusing them of misleading immigration authorities at border: ‘These are frivolous claims,'” tweeted Acosta.
Acosta’s tweet is completely false. He is saying that the president implied that legitimate asylum seekers are making “frivolous claims.” What he actually said is that people making “frivolous claims” are harming people seeking legitimate asylum.
“Unfortunately, legitimate asylum seekers are being displaced by those lodging frivolous claims,” said the president during his speech.
What the president said is completely reasonable. What Acosta said is an outright lie and a prime example of why many Americans do not trust the media.
Acosta was, of course, shredded online for his tweet.
“This is why people call you #FakeNews, Jim,” tweeted one user.

Check out other reactions below:
This is a lie and @Acosta is intentionally changing @realDonaldTrump's meaning.
What POTUS actually said was "unfortunately legitimate asylum asylum-seekers are being replaced by those lodging frivolous claims — these are frivolous claims to gain admission into our country." https://t.co/B4056tQh1B

You know there's video proving you're lying, right?

What’s important to note here is that Acosta is not removing context or even speaking in general terms. He instead is pushing a complete falsehood, one he seems committed to. The CNN reporter even doubled down on his ridiculous reporting later on Twitter.
“Hi @TrumpWarRoom.. in the transcript you provided you note that Trump describes asylum claims as ‘frivolous’ and ‘meritless.’ The transcript also notes Trump uses the term ‘asylum abuse.’ Trump clearly is accusing asylum seekers of misleading immigration authorities as I said,” Acosta wrote in response to a Twitter account providing a transcript of Trump’s speech.
Acosta is either incredibly confused or deliberately lying here. He is simply picking and choosing random words from the speech and then reorganizing them to come up with statements that feed into his Trump Derangement Syndrome.

He’s continued to say on his Twitter account that Trump is criticizing legitimate asylum seekers.
Mind you, Acosta’s pinned tweet on Twitter — the first tweet any viewer sees when they go to your page — reads: “We are not the enemy of the people. I am not your enemy. You are not my enemy. It is wrong to call your fellow Americans the enemy. We are all on the same team. We are all Americans.”
Imagine someone misrepresenting another person’s words to you, denying they ever did so and then condescendingly telling you that they are not your enemy. Any normal person would cut such a liar out of their lives. CNN gives that person a job.
