Popular AOC Twitter parody account suspended, conservatives say it’s political bias

A Twitter account parodying the views of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has been permanently suspended by Twitter, but the decision has conservatives in an uproar.

The account, @AOCPress, was operated by Michael Morrison, who has also been suspended.

While parody accounts are allowed on Twitter, people seem to be mixing up the AOC parody account with the real congresswoman, which says some pretty terrible things about both her views and the way voters view her.

Twitter’s official reason for suspending the account was “spammy behavior.”

A source told Reason that the account was suspended because multiple other accounts were reposting the material and this may have led some to believe the parody thoughts were actually from Cortez.

Twitter’s official rules state that “while you may use Twitter pseudonymously or as a parody, commentary, or fan account, you may not use misleading account information in order to engage in spammy, abusive, or disruptive behavior, including attempts to manipulate the conversations on Twitter.”

Twitter policy does not allow “posting duplicate or very similar content across multiple accounts” and “creating duplicate or very similar accounts; or creating fake accounts, impressions or account interactions (such as followers, Retweets, likes, etc.).”

This brings up an issue. If the AOC parody account was being reposted by others, then why would the original account be suspended?

The AOC parody account had more than 85,000 followers. It was created in November of last year. Tweets from the account were often incredibly popular.

A recent tweet that said, “If socialism doesn’t work then explain to me how Bernie Sanders has become a millionaire being a socialist,” got over 9000 retweets and over 30000 likes on the social media platform.

Donald Trump Jr., son of President Donald Trump, publicly criticized Twitter for suspending the account and accused the social media platform of political bias against conservatives.

“Why did @Twitter suspend a parody account that was is full compliance with their rules? Could it possibly be because the account was mocking the lefts new icon AOC? What’s the deal here @jack? Because it sure looks like political bias,” he wrote.

Many others have accused Twitter of political bias as well since the suspended AOC account included the word “parody” in both its bio and account name.

“Twitter has permanently suspended @AOCPress a good-natured and clearly-marked parody account and @OfficeOfMike my close friend who managed it,” responded conservative commentator Jack Posobiec to news of the suspension.

Posobiec later did a livestream interview with the account’s creator, Morrison.

“I think they just got scared that it was getting too powerful,” Morrison said in the livestream Periscope. Her personal account had over 50000 followers.

She added, “I think they [Twitter] just felt that it was time for it to go.”

She continued, “I never post anything with profanity, I keep everything clean. They’re all humorous tweets, I try to keep [the account] humorous, and that’s the point, to give everyone a good laugh.”
