This morning, former attorney Michael Cohen headed to prison to begin serving his sentence for lying to the House and Senate intelligence committees in 2017, as well as for tax fraud and campaign finance violations. He did not go quietly as he read a brief prepared statement to a crowd of reporters outside his building as he being escorted out to a waiting SUV.
The statement was a not-so-veiled swipe at President Trump.
“I hope when I rejoin my family and friends that the country will be in a place without xenophobia, injustice, and lies at the helm of our country,” Cohen said. “There still remains much to be told. And I look forward to the day that I can share the truth. And thank you all very much.”
Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison. He will serve the sentence in a federal prison in Otisville, New York. Sadly, Otisville was named by Forbes as one of “America’s 10 Cushiest Prisons.”
Once he arrives at Otisville, Cohen will go through medical and mental health screenings and be assigned a job which might include mowing the grounds or cleaning up the visiting room. He’ll also get sets of clothing, bedding and towels.
The prison reportedly houses about 115 white-collar inmates who sleep in bunks lined up in barrack-style halls …Â unlike the individual or two-man cells in higher-security facilities. Recreational amenities include tennis courts, horseshoes, and bocce ball.
“There’s no free time to work on your book, or whatever,” said former employee Don Drewett, according to an AP report. “You get your downtime when you’re supposed to be sleeping or when you can exercise, but that only happens at certain windows of the day. It’s not where in the middle of the day you can just opt to not go to work and go work out. That’s not the way that works.”
Cohen has reportedly been disbarred from practicing law after his perjury conviction. In addition to the prison sentence he has also been ordered to pay $1.4 million in restitution and a $50,000 fine, and forfeit $500,000.
President Trump has lashed out at Cohen over his cooperation with prosecutors, saying Cohen “lied” and deserves to “serve a full and complete sentence.”
The AP reports:
(Cohen’s) legal team asked House Democrats last month to intercede after Cohen testified on Capitol Hill, but they were reticent to do so. Federal prosecutors in New York were also no help, Cohen’s lawyers said.
Cohen was originally scheduled to start his sentence in March, but a judge granted a two-month delay so he could recover from surgery and get his affairs in order.
Giovanni Gambino, heir to the famous crime family, recently said, “A message for Michael Cohen: He better keep his mouth shut. Inmates love Trump, and hate rats. If he wants to get out alive, he better keep his mouth shut about Trump.”
