Jenna James, before and after losing 80 pounds.

“Today I celebrate 1 year of being #keto,” wrote former adult film star Jenna Jameson on Instagram. She has been using her social media accounts to document a progressively impressive weight loss of 80 pounds.

“I have absolutely never felt better! Combining #sobriety, the keto lifestyle and intermittent fasting is the perfect trifecta for me when it comes to a healthy sustainable fitness journey,” she posted.

Jameson had a child at the age of 42 a couple of years ago and she became determined to shed the extra weight that proved difficult to lose. A strict diet involving the popular Keto approach has delivered drastic results.

This post, in particular, seems to show the startling transformation Jameson has undergone …

Here goes nothing. #motivationmonday UUUGH. I didn’t want to post this before picture. But once I mulled it over in my mind, I realized how important normalizing women’s true bodies is. This is normal. This is beautiful. My transition to health has helped me realize a lot of my connection to “skinniness” was unhealthy. It’s very possible to be thin and frightening unhealthy. So thickness does not equate to being sick, but mine was. I was pre diabetic, and a literal sloth. I remember back when I weighed 80 lbs and was starving myself… I thought that was pretty at the time but had no clue. I’m now a healthy size 4 and can keep up with my kids. Hallelujah! So remember these #beforeandafter pictures aren’t just to show the esthetics of being slim, they show hard work and attention to my inside health. This is a years worth of recalibration and focus. So in closing, remember how important your precious health is… don’t stress on what is staring back at you in that mirror. #ketotransformation #ketodiet #beforeandafterweightloss #cellulite #keto #weightlosstransformation #weightlossjourney #intermittentfasting

In the “fair warning department” … as popular as Keto has become, there are many experts who say it is unsafe. According to HealthLine.com, it can be “downright dangerous.”

According to HealthLine, the keto diet gets quick results and therein lies the reason for its popularity …

The “keto” diet is any extremely low- or no-carbohydrate diet that forces the body into a state of ketosis. Ketosis occurs when people eat a low- or no-carb diet and molecules called ketones build up in their bloodstream. Low carbohydrate levels cause blood sugar levels to drop and the body begins breaking down fat to use as energy.

Ketosis is actually a mild form of ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis mostly affects people with type 1 diabetes. In fact, it is the leading cause of death of people with diabetes who are under 24 years of age.

“Keto diets should only be used under clinical supervision and only for brief periods,” said Francine Blinten, R.D., a certified clinical nutritionist and public health consultant, as reported by HealthLine. “They have worked successfully on some cancer patients in conjunction with chemotherapy to shrink tumors and to reduce seizures among people suffering from epilepsy.”

Keto diets are not used by athletes or for those hoping to gain muscle. Side effects of ketoacidosis include extreme fatigue, and eventually starvation.

Blinten said a keto diet should only be used in extreme cases. “It can do more harm than good. It can damage the heart, which is also a muscle,” she said.

“But there are many other ways to do it (lose weight) besides a fad diet that won’t keep weight off long-term,” she said.

Blinten has used a keto diet for certain cancer patients in specific circumstances. “People will do anything to get the weight off, she admitted. “However, a keto diet will do more harm than good for the majority of patients, especially if they have any underlying kidney or liver issues.

“People are using this for cosmetic reasons, but it’s so extreme that it’s dangerous,” she said.
