Tucker: Assange’s real sin was preventing Hillary Clinton from becoming president

Tucker Carlson ridiculed Republicans and Democrats who insist that Julian Assange is a Russian agent saying it’s clear that the real problem is that Assange embarrassed everyone in Washington by publishing their secrets — and that his “real sin” was stopping Hillary Clinton from becoming president.

“Just so it’s clear,” he said, “whatever his sins, Assange did not steal documents from the United States government. He did not hack the DNC servers. He did not break into John Podesta’s gmail account.”

“There is no proof that he is working for the Russian government, or ever was worked for the Russian government. Assange has never been charged with any of that and wasn’t today, no matter what they tell you,” he said.

“Assange’s real sin,” said Carslon, “was preventing Hillary Clinton from becoming president.”

Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks, was arrested this morning by British law enforcement, and forcibly removed from the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where he’d been living for seven years after having been granted asylum by Ecuador to prevent his extradition to Sweden.

British authorities later said he was arrested at the behest of officials in the United States, who have requested to have him extradited to face one count of conspiracy to steal classified documents. The nine-page indictment does not mention Russia or any Russians and does not accuse Assange of any crime in relation to the DNC.

Carlson told his viewers that Assange was a hero to the left until 2016, when he published DNC documents that proved that the chairwoman, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and top staffers were actively working for Hillary Clinton in the primary and scheming to hurt insurgent Bernie Sanders, though Schultz publicly said that the DNC was remaining neutral during the primary.

Democratic voters were outraged, and showed it by booing Wasserman Schultz at the DNC Convention. She was ultimately forced to step down, along with several other top DNC staffers, but the DNC had suffered a serious wound and lost the support of many stalwart Democratic voters and activists, who left the party for good.

The DNC’s friends in the media turned on Assange.

“The guardians of speech are now the enemies of speech” said Carlson.

“There was a time not so long ago really when reporters didn’t applaud the arrest of other journalists for publishing information,” he said, citing the Pentagon Papers case when every American journalist cheered on the New York Times’ publishing of stolen government documents that revealed government secrets about the Vietnam War.

Carlson ridiculed Republicans and Democrats who are insisting that Assange is a Russian agent, despite the total lack of evidence, citing Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE), who called Assange “a wicked tool of Vladimir Putin and the Russian intelligence services,” and said he “deserves to spend the rest of his life in prison.”
