New York GOP chairman targets opposition party over ‘outrageous’ bill to release Trump’s state tax returns

The chairman of the state GOP in New York ripped the opposition party in his state for pursuing “outrageous” legislation that would let them to share President Trump’s state tax returns with congressional committees that request it.

The bill, introduced by Democratic state Sen. Brad Hoylman, would amend existing law that makes it illegal to share someone’s state tax return information, according to Fox News.

In an appearance Tuesday on “Fox & Friends,” Ed Cox, the chairman of the New York State Republican Party, called it a “partisan” move designed to undermine the will of the American people.

“It is outrageous,” Cox said. “Because everyone has a right to keep their tax returns private under federal law and under state law, and here they are changing the law, legislation got passed, [Gov. Andrew] Cuomo says he’s going to sign it just for the President of the United States to force him to expose his tax returns, while they’re under audit.

“Look, there are a lot of agents looking at his tax returns – ‘you can take this deduction, you can’t take that deduction’ – but the American people during the campaign, he made it clear ‘I’m not going to release my tax returns’ – and guess what? They elected him President of the United States.”

Cox said it was just another fishing expedition by Democrats to try dirt on Trump and it will end up in the courts.

He compared it to a “bill of attainder,” an unconstitutional legislative act that singles out an individual for punishment without trial.

“This is a bill of attainder aimed at one person,” Cox said. “A bill of attainder is an ancient thing where the king doesn’t want a person to go to trial, he just wants to execute them. You have no privileges under law. You are executed. That is abhorrent under America. The Constitution forbids states from doing that, and this is a bill of attainder.”

Cox was even more critical of state Democrats in a statement on the party’s website, saying that they’re “suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome” and are only too happy to do the “dirty work of national Democrats.”

“The Democratic legislature and Governor Cuomo are suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome and playing politics at the expense of doing the people’s business,” Cox said in the release. “No matter how they dress it up for legal purposes, this unconstitutional bill of attainder is aimed at one individual for the political purpose of re-litigating the 2016 election. The bill would set a dangerous precedent for infringing on the privacy rights of all citizens.”

“Albany Democrats are happy to do the dirty work of national Democrats, yet they willfully turned a blind eye to the rampant corruption committed by their fellow Democrat, Andrew Cuomo and his Administration. They have no credibility, and this bill, if enacted, will fail in the courts and Democrats will once again have egg on their faces for their purely partisan politics.”
