Pro-life movie ‘Unplanned’ a huge box-office success despite the left’s massive efforts to suppress it

Lefties in the media did all they could to repress and hide promotions for the release “Unplanned,” the eye-opening pro-life movie that is surpassing all box-office expectations. Through its first week in theaters after its release on March 29, the movie pulled in $8.6 million, more than double initial projections and coming in fourth to the mega-budget movies Dumbo, Us, and Captain Marvel.

In fact, the per screen average bested Captain Marvel.

By April 5, estimated revenue was up to $10, 307,500. This weekend many more will watch the film as upwards of 1500 theaters nationwide are showing Unplanned this weekend, compared to 1059 movie houses the previous weekend. Note that big-budget releases typically debut on 3000 to 4000 screens.

Marc Thiessen of the Washington Post wrote that Unplanned is the “movie abortion supporters don’t want you to see,” and that fact is as evident as the glow on a mother’s face eight months into her pregnancy.

  • Most cable TV channels rejected ads for the movie.
  • Twitter temporarily suspended the movie’s account.
  • The Motion Picture Association of America gave it an “R” rating which requires anyone under the age of 17 to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. It also prevented most Christian radio stations from running ads because of existing policies against promoting r-rated content.

The Pure Flix-produced movie Unplanned is based on a true story and is taken directly from the book by the same name written by Abby Johnson, a former director of an abortion clinic in Bryan, Texas.

As she was brought into an operating room to witness an abortion procedure, Johnson watched on a sonogram as the “clump of cells” tried to escape the intrusive implements that led to ending what was obviously an innocent human life. This transformed Johnson who is now a strong proponent for the unborn.

According to Brad Slager of the Federalist, the movie was faced with many hurdles to getting the word out to the movie-going public and especially their intended audience, young women. He wrote: “Lifetime channel owner A&E Networks declared ‘Unplanned’ commercials could not run because they were centered on offensive or sensitive content. A similar response was given by the Discovery Channel syndicate, which included The Food Network, the Travel Channel, HGTV, and others. Also declining were NBC-owned USA Network, and the Hallmark Channel. One of the movie’s marketers noticed, however, the Lifetime network had pushed an interview with Scarlett Johansson where the actress promoted Planned Parenthood.”

Twitter problems for the Unplanned account were repeatedly reported. Dana Loesch and many others said they tried to “follow” the account only to show that they “unfollowed” it moments later. Richard Grenell showed what was happening …

In spite of the Twitter hijinks, the @UnplannedMovie account managed to gain more followers than Planned Parenthood.

Of course, the media is not giving up in its fight.

Yahoo News had a few things to say even while reporting on the movie’s surprising success …

“Unplanned” has been dismissed by some critics as propaganda.

“There have been films that treated Nazi doctors conducting evil experiments in concentration camps more sympathetically,” said Frank Scheck in The Hollywood Reporter.

Writing in the trade publication Variety, Owen Gleiberman said “Unplanned” “isn’t a good movie, but it’s effective propaganda.”

“‘Unplanned’ preaches to the pro-life choir, and it does so by making a case against abortion that’s absolutist and extreme,” Gleiberman said.

The movie’s co-director Cary Solomon shrugged off the criticism. “We didn’t turn this into a propaganda piece,” Solomon said in an interview with AFP. “We refused to do that. We wanted to tell a true life story and let the truth be interpreted by people that see it,” he said. “It’s an exact retelling of the book. Everything in the movie is based on her true story.

“We didn’t fabricate anything, we didn’t make anything up.”
