Tucker Carlson says AOC is right; an economy based on interest payments is a ‘scam’

Fox News host Tucker Carlson had an interesting message for his viewers on Monday, and they might have been reaching for the rewind button to see if they’d heard him right.

In his opening segment he mocked freshman Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY-14) for claims she made about her Green New Deal at an MSNBC town hall meeting in the Bronx on March 29, calling her a “moron.”

But then he said he also thought Ocasio-Cortez had delivered “a fairly insightful critique of the American economy” at the same event.

He cut to a clip of Ocasio-Cortez talking about “income inequality” saying that the American economy has become “financialized.”

“We have runaway income inequality,” Ocasio-Cortez said to moderator Chris Hayes. “We are at one of our most inequal points, economically speaking, in American history. We are dealing with a crisis of how our economy is even made up. Our economy is increasingly financialized, which means we are making profits off of interest, off of leasing your phone, off of doing all these things, but we aren’t producing and we aren’t innovating in the way that we need to as an economy.”

Carlson, while seeming to acknowledge that his viewers weren’t going to be interested in paying close attention to anything the socialist-loving congresswoman was saying, nevertheless urged them not to completely tune her out, suggesting that if they didn’t want to listen to her voice, they could maybe just “print it out and read it.”

“A lot of it’s basically true,” he said. “Neither party wants to talk about this. The Republicans are in a fetal position. They just don’t want to be unpopular anymore. They’ll do anything not to be unpopular. The Democrats want what they’ve always wanted: total and complete control over you and this country. Neither party will say that our economy, at is core, is badly distorted.”

It sounded as though Carlson was talking about income inequality, but then he went into more detail.

“Any economy based on interest payments isn’t really an economy: It’s a scam,” he said into the camera. “Healthy countries innovate. They make things. They don’t treat people like interchangeable widgets. They don’t worship finance. In a healthy country, bankers aren’t heroes. Private equity is not the highest-paid profession. Nobody brags about working in a hedge fund. In America right now, we have the opposite, unfortunately. And that’s why Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has a constituency.”
