The latest sign that the apocalypse may be upon us, or that Americans have way too much time on their hands and are bored out of their skulls, is a fad that has emerged on social media where people throw cheese at babies.
Called the “cheese challenge,” videos are being posted of babies being slapped in the face with a slice of cheese for the amusement of adult onlookers.
Granted, the children are not being hurt, but…
Started on Thursday by Twitter user @unclehxlmes, according to the New York Post, the quirky trend soon became a thing online.
The tweet that started the whole thing was deleted, as the user explained that he never expected it “to get THAT viral,” noting that the child in the video isn’t his little brother, adding in a second tweet that it was “invasive” for that family.
just to let you all know, that cheese tweet isnt my lil brother and ive deleted it🤧 didnt expect it to get THAT viral lmaoooo

But by then, the cheese was already out of the wrapper.

At least some admit they are bored silly
“The highlight of my day was watching this video of someone throwing a slice of cheese on their baby…. what’s wrong with me and why am I still laughing?” a social media user tweeted.

Another social media user warned of the potential outcome: “If I threw cheese at my baby he would attack me and call CPS on me so I will not be partaking in the cheese challenge.”

Wisconsin is considered America’s dairy land, but proud Wisconsinite Greta Van Susteren isn’t on board.
“Mike, this trend I don’t understand,” she tweeted in response to an inquiry asking if this is “a thing.”

And leave it to Slate to offer a “careful analysis” of the new fad — while a humorous take, it ends on a serious note:
Babies are defenseless creatures who can’t protect themselves when cheese is thrown in their direction and sometimes can’t figure out how to remove the cheese, which leaves them suspended in a cheesy limbo state until an adult steps in to provide assistance.
This, you might argue, is what makes “cheesing” great, but doesn’t that seem a little easy? It’s like dunking on a baby. Is it also funny when babies get hit by anvils or conked on the head or fall off cliffs or end up in any Wile E. Coyote–like situation? It is kind of funny when babies fall down, but not if they actually get hurt: No one wants to see a baby in distress. And cheesing a baby is a quick recipe for exactly that.
If nothing else, this confirms that cable television has utterly failed America in its task of providing entertainment.
Either way, social media users went back and forth over whether this was atrocious or funny as hell.
did realize how much i enjoyed watching people throw a slice of cheese on a baby’s face

Smh hush y’all, it’s a piece of cheese on a baby’s face. It didn’t hurt him, physically or emotionally. Babies are funny and also fun to mess with (safely)!! Relax and don’t take everything so seriously

like the baby cheese thing is inherently harmless sure but there’s still something underlyingly dystopian about parents doing something so so stupid as throwing a slice of cheese right at their kid’s face to harvest thousands of likes from strangers on the internet
