As expected, Michael Cohen branded President Donald Trump a racist Wednesday in his opening remarks before the House Oversight Committee.
But Trump’s former personal attorney may have been surprised to see Lynne Patton present at Wednesday’s hearing — she was a guest of Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., a strong supporter of the president.
Patton, an African-American, is a senior official in the Department of Housing and Urban Development in the Trump administration, once considered Cohen “one of my very best friend,” according to an Instagram post she shared Tuesday.
Meadows had Patton stand as he questioned Cohen about his claim that Trump is a racist.
“You made some very demeaning comments about the president that Ms. Patton doesn’t agree with. In fact, it has to do with your claim of racism,” Meadows said.
“She says that, as a daughter of a man born in Birmingham, Alabama, that there is no way that she would work for an individual who was racist,” he added.
Drilling Cohen for proof that Trump is a racist, which he claimed to have, Meadows asked him to produce it. The disgraced attorney responded weakly to say there are no black executives in the Trump Organization.
Meadows asked to put into the record a statement from Patton.
Patton openly questioned Cohen’s claim that Trump is a racist in a post on Twitter, asking why it took him “15 years” to make the allegation.
“I am honored to be the special guest of @RepMarkMeadows today. I am here in support of @POTUS and in support of the truth, as Michael Cohen (knows that I know) it to be. And the truth is that it doesn’t take you 15 years to call someone a racist. Unless they’re not one,” she tweeted.

In the Instagram post, Patton accused Michael Cohen of leveling “unsubstantiated claims” against Trump.
“I am sad that Michael has elected to leverage his own personal illegal activities into nothing more than political theater this week with the sole partisan purpose to embarrass a sitting President with unfounded personal or professional gossip,” she wrote.
“I am sad that Michael would turn his back on a man to whom he has repeatedly said he owes everything in the hope of a reduced prison sentence.”
Patton defended Trump when Omarosa Manigault-Newman claimed there was a recording of him saying the N-word.
“I just spoke to Bill Pruitt tonight before releasing this statement,” Patton said in a statement. “He confirmed to me (before Hardball had even gone off the air) that he does NOT have an audio tape of President Trump using the “N-word” and has NEVER had an audio tape of President Trump using the ‘N-word.’ Period.”
