It’s not easy being U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., as the newly elected lawmaker bounces from one controversy to another, sometimes in the same day.
And as always, questions remain about what is and is not true.
The self-described democratic socialist portrays herself as the people’s champion who lived a hard-scrabbled life growing up in one of New York City’s toughest boroughs — turns out she didn’t. In fact, the New York Post did a story on Saturday that questioned whether she even lives in the Bronx neighborhood she associates with, describing her as “a virtual ghost” there.
While Ocasio-Cortez was born in the Bronx, when she was five her father relocated the family to a home in Yorktown Heights, an upscale Westchester County suburb with a median income of $95,523.
Ocasio-Cortez responded to The Post through a spokesman on Sunday, claiming she recently moved out of the condo to a larger apartment “a block and a half away” with her boyfriend — the mortgage on the condo has reportedly been satisfied, despite media reports during her campaign of her struggling to keep up with them.
She also took to Twitter to defend herself — a pattern has emerged in that the harder the media darling pushes back, the closer to home you can be sure a story hits.
In the process, Ocasio-Cortez capitalizing on the reports of a Coast Guard lieutenant stockpiling guns and compiling a hit list of prominent Democrats and journalists to justify her curious actions.
“I still live in my hood and literally Instagrammed from my apartment tonight,” she tweeted Sunday evening. “A man was just arrested last week with a stockpile of guns specifically trying to kill me & others, so yeah I’m not gonna disclose my personal address or tell people when I move. Sorry!”

So, mystery solved? Not so fast.
While it’s feasible that she moved to a new apartment nearby and wants to keep that address a secret for the time being, there were multiple questions raised by The Post that the happy socialist skimmed right over.
Ocasio-Cortez listed her deceased father’s Bronx condo as her address, but neighbors, to include the person living next door, said they have never seen Ocasio-Cortez or her boyfriend, Riley Roberts, who listed the address as his own since last spring.
A nearby pizzeria and a local grocery store told The Post she never patronized their businesses. A server at a nearby taqueria said Ocasio-Cortez only came in with news crews.
Even more damning, a postal worker who delivers mail to the building said mail sits in the box for months before being collected — the worker said in the last 10 years he has only seen Ocasio-Cortez intermittently.
“Just because their names are on the box doesn’t mean they live there,” he said.
The paper also reported that when Ocasio-Cortez filed paperwork to run for office, she mistakenly listed a neighboring district before correcting the error days later.
Adding to the equation, the congresswoman has yet to open an office in her district and has no local phone number.
But the most damning factor in all of this is Ocasio-Cortez “literally ducked questions about her residence, after an appearance Saturday in Queens,” The Post reported.
The paper said they approached her at an appearance in Queens and she told them to wait for her to pose for a photograph. Ocasio-Cortez then slipped out a back door and into a waiting SUV.
Seems safe to say that the 29-year-old Democrat is just not ready for prime time.
