Brit Hume scolded gushing reporters for clothes shopping with Kamala Harris. They respond by calling him sexist.

In what proves to be a perfect encapsulation of what to expect in the 2020 presidential election, reporters tasked with covering the campaign of Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., were seen acting more like girlfriends out on a shopping spree with the candidate than journalists.

Harris was touring female-owned businesses in Columbia, South Carolina, when she was “forced” by some of the reporters covering her to try on a nice rainbow sequined jacket, as seen in a tweet from CNN national political reporter Maeve Reston.

“We kind of forced @kamalaharris to try on this awesome oversized rainbow sequin jacket … She snapped it up. @alivitali perfectly named it as “the Mardi Gras Jacket” #2020 #SouthCarolina #CampaignFashionReport.”

NBC News political reporter Ali Vitali was tagged by Reston for the clever name she assigned to the jacket, and the reporter returned the favor in a tweet of her own that identifies Reston as the instigator.

“.@KamalaHarris trying this amazing rainbow coat (to me this screams Mardi Gras coat!), inspired by an inquiry from @MaeveReston of #campaignfashionreport fame,” she tweeted.

CBS News political reporter Caitlin Huey-Burns got in on the act as well — all three of these women being hard news journalists, mind you.

NBC’s Vitali even goes so far as to report that Harris bought the jacket.

And the girls-day-out shopping excursion continued at the next boutique visited, we are informed by the crack CBS News reporter.

The whole affair was more than Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume could bear.

Hume, from an age when journalism still had some sense of pride, took to Twitter to call the spectacle “embarrassing” in a response to Burns’ tweet.

“This is just embarrassing,” he tweeted. “So now journalists are going shopping with Harris, helping pick out clothes and then putting out glowing tweets about it.”

Naturally, this set the liberal media dogs loose.

NBC reporter Kasie Hunt was quick to defend her colleagues — by taking a swipe at Republicans, of course.

Hume responded to the joust to remind Hunt, who he said was “missing the point,” of the difference between coverage and participation.

“Talk about missing the point. Did journalists help Walker pick out his motorcycle, then gush about it on Twitter? Did they they help Romney on with his life jacket? That Kamala Harris shopping incident wasn’t coverage, it was participation,” he tweeted.

Next up was Ben Rhodes — his response coming at the exact same time as Hunt’s.

In a whataboutism, the former Obama adviser points to Fox News host Sean Hannity appeared on stage at a Trump campaign rally in 2016.

“The most prominent Fox personality literally did a campaign rally with Trump. That’s what’s embarrassing,” Rhodes tweeted.

Hume fired back to call the comparison “lame,” noting Hannity is an opinion host, not a hard news reporter and that he was “rebuked” by his network for doing so.

“And he was rebuked by management for doing so. And he’s not the guy actually covering Trump. He’s not a correspondent, he’s an opinion host. Lame comparison.” Hume replied.

As for the CNN reporter who instigated the jacket incident, Reston offered America this proverbial middle finger:

She also attacked her critics for their “racism, sexism & misogyny.”

Yep, not much question about her liberal make up, is there?

Reston even retweets posts from Sen. Harris — such as a clip of California Gov. Gavin Newson endorsing the candidate.

Burns also responded to Hume, slipping out of girlfriend mode back into journalist mode to give the incident more of an official tone by saying Harris did “two gaggles with reporters.”

…and we like asked some really hard questions.
