Running to challenge President Donald Trump in 2020 will present candidates with an inescapable choice: what to do about the radical hard-left Democratic Party base as represented by self-vowed socialist Rep. Alexander Ocasio-Cortez.
While the likes of Democratic Sens. Kamala Harris, Elizabeith Warren and Kirsten Gillibrand were quick to submit to Ocasio-Cortez’s “Green Deal” litmus test, which is to be funded by making wealthy Americans pay a marginal tax rate as high as 70%, former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz appears to be taking the road less traveled.
Schultz, one of those immoral billionaires that Ocasio-Cortez speaks of, was at the first stop of his book tour Monday night in Manhattan and he dismissed the extreme anti-capitalist views of the newly elected democratic socialist as “un-American,” and said she is “misinformed.”
Asked to respond to an Ocasio-Cortez advisor, who said that becoming a billionaire is a failure of the system, the representation of an improperly structured capitalist society, Schultz didn’t mince words.
“It’s so un-American to think that way,” he said. “First off, I’m self-made. I came from the projects and took advantage of the promise of the country. I am living proof of the American Dream.”
“I think there is a problem that she has identified,” Schultz continued. “But I think the way she’s going about it — unfortunately, she’s a bit misinformed.”
Speaking at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event, Ocasio-Cortez agreed that “a system that allows billionaires to exist” is immoral, CNBC reported.
In what amounts to blatant wealth redistribution to address income inequality, she appears to be advocating for the federal government to regulate success.
“Are we comfortable with a society where someone can have a helipad while [New York City] is experiencing the highest rates of people experiencing homelessness since the Great Depression?” Ocasio-Cortez asked.
“Where do we draw the line in excess?” she said. “Is our material technology outpacing our moral technology?”
(Whatever that means.)
Schultz said that Ocasio-Cortez “has identified issues that have to be fixed, but not to do it in a way that’s punitive to people who have succeeded because of the foundation and the gift in the promise of the country.”
He went on to explain that tax relief for lower income Americans and job creation are better solutions.
Schultz spoke of infrastructure development, which he foresees as an opportunity to make internet access “a right” for all Americans — see free stuff in exchange for your vote.
He was also critical of the proposals from far-left Democrat for a single-payer health care system and free college tuition, saying these things are not realistic, according to Fox News.
Instead, Schultz spoke of expanding the economy and curbing entitlements to get the national debt under control.
“If I ran as a Democrat I would have to say things in my heart I do not believe,” said Schultz of his decision to run as an independent.
Which prompts one to question why Schultz opted to register as a Democrat.
