Some members of President Donald Trump’s base reacted negatively Saturday after he proposed a deal to end the ongoing government shutdown, with one of them in particular, conservative commentator Ann Coulter, going so far as to furiously compare him to failed presidential nominee Jeb Bush.
Announced during a White House presser that afternoon, the deal calls for Democrats agreeing to approve $5.7 billion in funding for a southern U.S. border wall in exchange for the president granting extended temporary protections to the Democrats’ beloved DACA and TPS recipients.
The immigration hardliners among his base took this to mean amnesty. Among the loudest of his critics was Coulter, who accused Trump of having become as weak as Jeb Bush:

Some of her concerns are valid. The last time a U.S. president tried to secure the border in exchange for granting protections to criminal aliens, he got bamboozled.
“The 1986 Simpson-Mazzoli Act, signed by Ronald Reagan. It granted amnesty to the then 3 million illegal immigrants and promised border enforcement. Amnesty came. Enforcement never did. Reagan was swindled,” the late Charles Krauthammer noted in a column six years ago.
The difference is that the protections offered by Trump would only be temporary.
“Provisional status will be granted for three years for current DACA recipients, covering 700,000 illegal immigrants brought here by their parents at a young age,” a statement issued by the White House following Trump’s speech explained.
“Provisional status will be granted to certain current TPS recipients for three years, providing 300,000 immigrants whose protected status is facing expiration more certainty as Congress works on a larger immigration deal.”
Established by Congress in 1990, TPS provides “temporary legal status” to migrants from countries suffering from armed conflict, an environment disaster or “[o]ther extraordinary and temporary conditions.”
Unconstitutionally enacted by former President Barack Hussein Obama, his widely criticized Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy grants similar protections to any criminal migrant who was smuggled into the United States before he or she turned 18.

It’s unclear why Coulter equates three years of temporary protection to permanent amnesty. It’s also unclear why she thinks the $5.7 billion in border funding requested by the president would only allow for “100 miles of border wall” to be built.
The Department of Homeland Security has estimated that the $5.7 billion would be enough for it to erect 215 miles’ worth of sturdy walls, according to Fox News.
“DHS officials said that of the 215 ‘linear miles,’ well over a hundred miles would be brand new wall in places where there is no barrier now. The majority of this construction would be in the Rio Grande area, specifically the Laredo sector, along the Texas border with Mexico,” Fox noted last month.
“DHS officials said those 215 miles would be the most ‘critical’ locations that need to be addressed.”
The good news for Coulter and other immigration hardliners is that congressional Democrat leaders have made it clear they have no intention of accepting the president’s deal.

According to Coulter’s own base, Trump already knew they’d reject it — and that’s why he proposed the deal in the first place: to showcase the Democrats’ intransigence.
