With the college football national champions coming to dinner the White House served up a heaping helping of fast food fare, with President Donald Trump opting to have a little fun with the menu selection given the limited options presented by the government shutdown.
“We ordered American fast food, paid for by me. Lots of hamburgers, lots of pizza,” Trump told reporters Monday evening, according to Fox News. “We have some very large people that like eating, so I think we’re going to have a little fun.”

The Clemson Tigers defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide, 44-16, on Jan. 7 for its second national championship in three seasons, and was making the traditional visit to the White House this week.
President Trump informed the White House press pool of the visit and the menu Monday morning, saying he would think “that’s their favorite food.”
The presidential spread included stacks of Wendy’s burgers, McDonald’s Big Macs and QuarterPounders, and Burger King Whoppers. Adding a touch of class to the casual offering, french fries were served in White House cups bearing the presidential seal.

Pizza was also included among the “great American food,” as the president described the offering.
“If it’s American, I like it. It’s all American stuff. … But it’s good stuff and we have the national champion team, as you know, Clemson Tigers. And they had a fantastic game against Alabama and they’re all here. They’re right outside the room and I think we’re going to let you see them,” Trump told reporters.

“But I’ll bet you, as much food as we have — we have pizzas, we have 300 hamburgers, many, many french fries, all of our favorite foods. I want to see what’s here when we leave, because I don’t think it’s going to be much.”
Trump, a noted fan of fast food, did not show any favoritism over the competing brands.
“I like it all,” he said. “It’s great stuff.”
Asked which of the fast food eats he likes best, "I like it all," said @POTUS. "It's all great stuff." Said it'll be interesting to see how much is left, after the Clemson team fills up. Thinks they'll like it better than anything else the WH could serve. pic.twitter.com/8mlPIREZmu

Amid the partial government shutdown brought on by Democrats refusing to address border security, the White House chefs are among the federal employees furloughed, so the menu choice is not only practical, considering there’s a roomful of football players, it’s efficient.
And paid for by the president.
“The President wanted to host a fun event to celebrate the College Football National Champion Clemson Tigers. Because the Democrats refuse to negotiate on border security, much of the residence staff at the White House is furloughed – so the President is personally paying for the event to be catered with some of everyone’s favorite fast foods,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said.

Speaking to reporters from the State Room, the president was up front about the choice of food.
“The reason we did this is the government shutdown,” Trump told reporters.
One of the Clemson coaches, wide receivers coach Jeff Scott, shared a photo of a tray of QuarterPounders on social media, adding: “Presidential Dinner.”
