According to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, the ones who acted stubborn and intransigent during a meeting held Wednesday afternoon at the White House in regard to the ongoing government shutdown were congressional Democrat leaders, not President Donald Trump.
This version of events contradicts the version outlined by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer during a press conference held outside the White House immediately after the meeting.
According to Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the president had a “temper tantrum” and refused to negotiate with them over putting a halt to the ongoing shutdown.
Speaking with reporters immediately following the press conference held by the congressional Democrat leaders, McCarthy suggested that these claims were bald-faced lies.
Listen:
“The time that you had cameras in the meeting — I think we need to bring them back, because what [Schumer] described the meeting to be was totally different than what took place,” he said.
Last month the president allowed the media to record a meeting between him, Vice President Mike Pence, Pelosi and Schumer in regards to the then-upcoming shutdown.
During the “debate” over how to resolve the then-growing crisis, both congressional Democrat leaders complained about the presence of cameras for reasons that remain unclear.
Dovetailing back to Wednesday’s meeting, not only did the president start it by handing out candy to everybody — this has been confirmed by various media outlets — but he made it abundantly clear that he wanted to “get this solved,” according to McCarthy.
“I want to turn the floor over, the president said, to Speaker Pelosi and Schumer,” the House minority leader recalled. “Tell us what offer you have. … She began to argue whether we even had a crisis or whether facts are true. [She] turned to Schumer, again, who said, we just have to open the government up. The president would go back and forth in a negotiation, in a very respectful way.”
Meanwhile, Schumer allegedly continued to raise his voice in growing anger.
“The president then turned to the speaker and politely asked her, OK, Nancy, if we open the government up in 30 days, could we have border security? She raised her hand and said no, not at all. The president calmly said, I guess you’re still not wanting to deal with the problem,” McCarthy said.
Now listen to Schumer’s version of events and take note of the differences:
“We saw a temper tantrum because he couldn’t get his way, and he just walked out of the meeting,” Schumer claimed to the media. “I asked him to open up the government. … And I said, just why won’t you do that, we will continue to discuss, we’re willing to discuss anything. And he said, if I open up the government, you won’t do what I want.”
“That’s cruel, that’s callous and that’s using millions of innocent people as sort of pawns, and it was wrong. And then a few minutes later, he sort of slammed the table, and when leader Pelosi said she didn’t agree with the wall, he just walked out and said, we have nothing to discuss.”
This narrative completely differs from the one recounted by McCarthy.
“The way they have displayed and their behavior is embarrassing to me. And the way to come out to this floor and talk about a meeting in a manner that did not take place in there is disturbing to me,” the House minority leader noted during the end of his statement Wednesday.
He also denied Schumer’s claim that the president had slammed his hand on his desk.
After WH mtg, McCarthy says Trump “didn’t slam his hands down at all. He said ‘Alright I guess you guys don’t want to do anything.'”

The president has denied this as well:
Cryin Chuck told his favorite lie when he used his standard sound bite that I “slammed the table & walked out of the room. He had a temper tantrum.” Because I knew he would say that, and after Nancy said no to proper Border Security, I politely said bye-bye and left, no slamming!

So who’s telling the truth? While that remains unclear, the congressional Democrat leaders’ complaints last month about being forced to “debate” publicly suggests it’s them.
Why else would they have complained about transparency? It was as if they wanted the discussion to be private so they could lie about it afterwards.
Or at least this is what the denizens of social media suspect is the truth.
Look:
I would have the TV Cameras and Recorders to protect myself against Pelosi and Schumer lying about what took place. They won’t negotiate, but they can sure lie a lot about what took place at the meeting. That’s why they don’t like cameras in the room.

Sir, Mr.McCarthy, please back the CAMERAS for TRANSPARENCY for the American people. It sounds as if Pelosi & Schumer LIED about what took place in today’s meeting with POTUS. DEMOCRATS DID NOT WANT TO HELP POTUS FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE TO PROTECT OUR NATION.

@SenSchumer Well, you blew it. You lied after the meeting, so that was your last off-camera meeting ever with President Trump. From now on, and forever, you’ll be on camera and televised. Transparency? You got it.

This is exactly why @SpeakerPelosi and @SenSchumer didn’t appreciate the cameras in the room with their other Trump meeting. #transparency pic.twitter.com/ni2wfoLSfq

Transparency, transparency, transparency…. isn’t this what Pelosi promised. Bring C-SPAN in and televise. I want to see for myself. Standing before mics when leaving WH is not enough…..

Remember that @realDonaldTrump, @chuckschumer & @SpeakerPelosi photo op when Trump started negotiating, Pelosi got upset & Trump told her transparency was a good thing? https://t.co/EdlgUSndih

Why aren’t there any cameras in these meetings with Dems for Border Wall funding? Where is the transparency?!?
Who is telling truth about the discussions? Schumer and Pelosi?
Americans don’t trust our government. We Are Not Naive!#BuildTheWall
