‘He was endorsing me, I wasn’t endorsing him’: ‘Flip-flopping’ Romney won’t commit to supporting Trump 2020

Thanks to the flip-flopping rhetoric of failed 2012 Republican presidential nominee Willard Mitt Romney, many conservatives were left scratching their heads in confusion this Wednesday.

First, the former Massachusetts governor dropped a “jealous, vengeful” op-ed for The Washington Post in which he ripped into President Donald Trump for his alleged character flaws.

Then hours later he announced that he would not be running for the presidency, shocking those who were positive his op-ed was designed to pave the path for him to run in 2020. Why else would he have taken shots at the president, especially after Trump helped him win election as a Utah senator?

“No. You may have heard, I ran before. I’ve had that experience,” he said during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, before going on to praise the president for his 2016 victory.

“And, by the way, I acknowledge the president was successful. And I was not. He did something I couldn’t do. He won. And I recognize that and appreciate that. But no, I’m not running again.”

Listen:

In one final move that made no sense to many, the newly elected Utah senator told Tapper that he wouldn’t necessarily support the president’s 2020 reelection campaign.

“I haven’t decided who I’m going to endorse in 2020,”  he said. “I’m going to see what the alternatives are. I think it’s early to make that decision and I want to see what the alternatives are.”

“[A]fter he was elected president, it was very much my hope that he would rise to the occasion, rise to the mantle of the office. After all, becoming President of the United States is quite an elevation for anybody. And he has said during the campaign that he could be extraordinary presidential.”

“I think that while he spoke of that, and while that was my hope, I don’t think he’s followed through on that front the way he’s followed through on some of his other promises.”

To many it felt as if Romney were again flip-flopping. First he wrote a column that trashed Trump. Then he announced that he wouldn’t be running in 2012 before going on to praise Trump for winning in 2016. And last but not least, he trashed Trump again for reasons that remain unclear.

He gave off the image of a forlorn girl ripping petals from a flower while chanting, “I love him. I hate him. I love him. I hate him. I love him. I hate him. I love him. I hate him.”

See social media’s reaction below:

During the midterm elections last year, Romney ran to Trump for an endorsement. The president happily obliged, giving the failed presidential nominee the boost he needed to win.

After the president endorsed him, Romney delivered a speech predicting Trump would win reelection in 2020: “I think President Trump will be re-nominated by my party easily, and I think he’ll be re-elected solidly,” he said in a speech to a group of GOP donors in Utah.

But the moment Romney won election in Utah, his attitude toward the president experienced an abrupt 180-degree adjustment, surprise, surprise. It’s in fact not a surprise because his entire political career contains 1,000+ flip flops on every issue imaginable, including his endorsement by Trump.

Well, he was endorsing me. I wasn’t endorsing him,” Romney said of the endorsement.

Many find this flip-flopping to be inordinately annoying. According to social media, while Trump may not possess the best character traits in the world, at least his stands for something.
