Ed Henry: Why was it OK for Obama to talk tough politics to troops 2 years ago, but it’s a sin for Trump?

Earlier this week President Donald Trump delivered a speech to U.S. soldiers stationed in Iraq. During the speech, he criticized congressional Democrats for refusing to support a currently stalled funding bill that includes money for the construction of a U.S. southern border wall.

“I don’t know if you folks are aware of what’s happening. We want to have strong borders in the United States. The Democrats don’t want to let us have strong borders,” he said.

Last week House Republicans passed a spending bill that included funding for the wall. Because of obstruction by congressional Democrats, The government entered into a partial shutdown last Saturday morning as a result.

Listen:

Following this speech, Democrats and their media allies rushed to their microphones and social media accounts to blast the president for politicizing his speech to the military.

What Fox News chief national correspondent Ed Henry wanted to know Friday was why Democrats never issued similar complaints two years ago when then-President Barack Hussein used his final speech to America’s military forces to criticize then-president-elect Trump.

While Obama admittedly never mentioned Trump by name, he took several shots at the president-elect, contrasting his own vision of America with that of the future president.

“The United States of America is not a country that imposes religious tests as a price for freedom,” he said during a speech at MacDill Air Force Base, taking issue with Trump’s plans to impose a ban on immigration “from any nation that has been compromised by terrorism.”

Listen to the relevant portion of the speech below:

“Then-President Barack Obama is on the way out of office, he talks to troops in a sort of farewell address and attacks President-elect Trump about the travel ban and a whole host other issues,” Henry noted Friday during a discussion with Democrat Rep. John Garamendi.

“Why was it OK for Barack Obama, but somehow Donald Trump does it, and you’re saying it’s political?” he then asked, taking issue with the criticism the president has been receiving for the speech he delivered during a surprise visit to U.S. troops in Iraq.

Judging by the answer provided by Garamendi, it doesn’t appear there’s any legitimate reason, save for Trump Derangement Syndrome.

“If it’s political of Donald to do it, it’s political for Barack to do it. In either case, I don’t think it’s particularly appropriate,”  he replied without explaining why he never said this two years ago.

“Particularly on these Christmas or holiday visits that are standard or should be standard for the president to go into the war zone during that particular time of year. They shouldn’t make it political, either way, whether Obama did or Trump did it. Either way, I would say not a good thing to do.”

But again he failed to explain why he never complained two years ago.

Listen:

When Obama delivered his speech, the media reported it neutrally.

HERE’S WHAT YOU’RE MISSING …

“Obama defends his wartime strategy and laments Trump’s likely change of course,” a headline from The Washington Post reads.

“President Obama Terror Speech Also a Warning to Donald Trump,” a headline from Time magazine adds.

Yet this time around Democrats and their media allies went into overdrive slamming Trump.

Look:

“He offered our brave men and women in uniform the bitter insult of using them as political pawns to push his radical right-wing, anti-immigrant agenda,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s deputy chief of staff, Drew Hammill, complained to The New York Times. “The president turned his first visit to our troops into another cringe-worthy Donald Trump reality-show special.”

Again, where were these complaints after Obama’s speech? That these complaints don’t even exist is just more evidence of the left’s glaring double standards, according to social media:
