Turns out, Thursday was quite the busy day in American politics.
In what was reported as more of a “symbolic move,” President Donald Trump issued a memorandum in April directing his administration to end “catch and release,” a policy where illegal immigrants are released into the U.S. to await a court hearing — of which the vast majority never showed up for.
But amid all the uproar Thursday night over Defense Secretary Jim Mattis tendering his resignation after Trump announced that he will withdraw troops from Syria, and as the House passed a stopgap spending bill that funds the border wall, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders quietly tweeted that “catch and release has ended.”
“Due to the Trump administration’s strong leadership, catch and release has ended. Illegal immigrants apprehended in the U.S. must now return to Mexico. Thank you to the government of Mexico, who is now doing more to solve our illegal immigration problem than the Democrats,” she posted on Twitter.

The tweet comes after the administration announcing earlier in the day that asylum-seekers crossing the southern border will be returned to Mexico and will be required to wait there while their cases are decided — Mexico has agreed to the deal, saying it will offer protection to these people as they wait.
Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen appeared before the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday and, amid absolute shameful behavior by some Democratic lawmakers, was clear that the goal is to end the ruse of “catch and release,” the Washington Times reported.
“They will not be able to disappear into the United States. They will have to wait for approval to come into the United States,” Nielsen told the panel. “If they are granted asylum by a U.S. judge, they will be welcomed into America. If they are not, they will be removed to their home countries.”
Nielsen issued a statement after the hearing saying the major policy move will help eliminate an incentive that draws illegal immigrants to the southern border on what proves to be a very dangerous journey, and will help “bring the illegal immigration crisis under control.”
“We will confront this crisis head on, uphold the rule of law, and strengthen our humanitarian commitments,” she said. “Aliens trying to game the system to get into our country illegally will no longer be able to disappear into the United States, where many skip their court dates.”
“‘Catch and release’ will be replaced with ‘catch and return.’ In doing so, we will reduce illegal migration by removing one of the key incentives that encourages people from taking the dangerous journey to the United States in the first place,” she continued. “This will also allow us to focus more attention on those who are actually fleeing persecution.”
And make no mistake, despite a complicit media’s inattention illegal immigration is a major problem, with people illegally entering the country daily by the hundreds, if not thousands.

And with Democrats trying to exploit the death of a young child to further their open border agenda, deaths and injuries on the dangerous trek are a common occurrence.

As they do with all efforts to bring under control the illegal immigrant crisis, expect the Democratic Party and their open border allies to challenge the new “catch and return” policy.
