Echoing a sentiment held by many, “Fox & Friends” co-host Brian Kilmeade pulled no punches on Friday during an interview with White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on President Donald Trump’s decision to pull troops out of Syria and Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis resigning shortly thereafter.
Not that Sanders didn’t push back on the claim that Trump just “re-founded ISIS,” as Kilmeade implied, adding that the president was also giving Russia “a big win.”
“He also is doing exactly what he criticized President Obama for doing,” the Fox News co-host host told Sanders. “He said President Obama is the founder of ISIS. He just refounded ISIS because they have 30,000 men there and they’re already striking back with our would-be evacuation. The president is really on the griddle with this.”
Sanders “respectfully and vehemently ” disagreed with Kilmeade’s assessment.
“The idea that the president has had anything to do with helping ISIS reemerge is absolutely outrageous,” she replied.
“Leaving is helping,” Kilmeade interjected. “Leaving is helping.”
The president’s spokeswoman responded by saying unequivocally that Trump would “destroy” ISIS if it reemerges, before insisting U.S. forces have “wiped out 99 percent of ISIS in Syria.”
“If ISIS wants to pick a fight with somebody, they sure as heck don’t want to pick one with Donald Trump because he will destroy them and defeat them,” she told Kilmeade. “He’s made that extremely clear.”
“The president doesn’t want to be in the middle of a civil war in the Middle East and continue to put American lives on the line,” Sanders added.
Kilmeade told Sanders the “word on the ground is different from what you just said,” not that the word is necessarily coming from supporters of the president.
Ironically, in addition to the pushback from some on the right, Democrats have also been criticizing Trump’s decision.
As Ben Stein recently alluded, perhaps Trump is indeed a “magic man.” Who else can turn a horde of liberal pacifists into neo-cons wanting to prolong a military presence in Syria?
