With President Donald Trump yet to meet with House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday to discuss funding the federal government, he took to social media beforehand to threaten to have the military “build the remaining sections” of the U.S.-Mexico border wall.
Trump tweeted: “…People do not yet realize how much of the Wall, including really effective renovation, has already been built. If the Democrats do not give us the votes to secure our Country, the Military will build the remaining sections of the Wall. They know how important it is!”

The post was part of a series of tweets from the president early Tuesday on illegal immigration and the effectiveness of placing barriers along the southern border, as seen in the handling of the migrant caravan that tried to storm the border.

After calling out Democrats for rejecting border security in pursuit of open borders, President Trump declared the southern border is “secure and will remain that way.”

Nonetheless, Democratic leadership, which is offering $1.3 billion for border security, has signaled their intentions to not support his proposal.
“Republicans still control the House, the Senate, and the White House, and they have the power to keep the government open. Our country cannot afford a Trump Shutdown, especially at this time of economic uncertainty,” Pelosi and Schumer said in a joint statement Monday. “This holiday season, the president knows full well that his wall proposal does not have the votes to pass the House and Senate, and should not be an obstacle to a bipartisan agreement.”
