Thanks to the United States’ widely criticized birthright citizenship rule, two former members of the caravan of migrants stationed in Tijuana are now the parents of an American citizen.
Honduran illegal immigrant Maryury Elizabeth Serrano-Hernandez, 19, gave birth last month in the United States shortly after she and her illegal immigrant husband, Miguel Ortiz, 20, scaled the border wall near San Diego with their 3-year-old illegal immigrant son.
“With the faith in God, I always said my son will be born there (in America),” she proudly said during a recent interview with Univision, according to translations by Fox News.
The original Spanish interview may be watched below by those who speak the language:
Serrano-Hernandez and her husband claim that they purposefully crossed into the U.S. illegally on Nov. 27 after allegedly being frightened by local anti-caravan protesters in Tijuana.
“At the makeshift camp, Serrano-Hernandez and her husband say they feared for their safety after being surrounded by Mexicans who weren’t happy they were there,” Fox notes. “Scared and outnumbered, they decided to cross the border illegally.”
This allegation appears to contrast with reports from Tijuana that it’s been members of the caravan — some of whom happen to be criminals and gang members — who’ve been perpetrating crimes and reportedly bringing drugs and diseases into the community.

After scaling the wall they ran into three U.S. Border Patrol agents who demanded they turn around and return to Tijuana. They reportedly refused and demanded asylum, forcing the border agents to transfer them to a U.S. Customers and Border Protection facility for processing.
It was at the facility that Serrano-Hernandez began experiencing labor symptoms.
“The woman, who was eight months pregnant, began complaining of abdominal pain (Nov. 27) and was immediately transported to a local hospital by Border Patrol agents,” agency officials told Fox.
There she gave birth to a U.S. citizen, meaning she and her family are now entitled to a lifetime of certain benefits. It doesn’t appear, however, that neither Serrano-Hernandez or her husband are grateful.
According to Fox, they complained to Univision about the conditions at the hospital.
“Her husband claims immigration officials, who stood guard outside the hospital room, closed all the windows and tried placing handcuffs on the new mother moments after giving birth,” Fox notes.
“They also inspected food brought in by nurses and monitored people entering and exiting the room. The nurses held a drive and gifted the family clothes, diapers and baby wipes but Ortiz says once his family returned to the San Diego detention center, their property was confiscated.”
“I felt like a criminal,” Serrano-Hernandez reportedly bemoaned.
According to some on social media, she deserves to feel this way:

“I felt like a criminal,” Serrano-Hernandez said.
She is and she should have been shot as she scaled the wall.

“I felt like a criminal?” Gee maybe that’s bc you are one! That whole story about being in fear so crossed illegally & asked for asylum was BS. She wanted to give birth. They got away with it & played the US. More will follow now. What a mess.https://t.co/8K2TAD6Tzk

If a criminal breaks into my home and has a baby in my front room, it doesn’t make them members of my family and I’m not responsible for their welfare.

Speaking about the family’s good fortune Thursday morning, “Fox & Friends” co-host Steve Doocy lamented that despite the American people’s opposition to birthright citizenship, Serrano-Hernandez and her family are set no matter what.
“It’s the law,” he bluntly stated.
But as noted by co-host Ainsley Earhardt, President Donald Trump seeks to change it: “The president’s not for it, he says it’s ridiculous, and he wants to sign an executive order to end it.”
Listen:
“It was always told to me that you needed a constitutional amendment. Guess what? You don’t,” the president said earlier this year, adding that America is the only country “where a person comes in and has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States.”
