While some might argue that there’s a little too much “self love” going on here, a plus size model offered a counter to this year’s Victoria’s Secret lingerie event.
Khrystyana Kazakova, a Siberia native and former “America’s Next Top Model,” contestant set up “The Real Catwalk” in Times Square, presenting what was characterized by the New York Post as “a guerrilla-style fashion show.”
Kazakova shared a few images on Instagram.
A partial caption from one photo said: “Every one of us is on our individual path of self love and self expression, and I am happy that this platform that we collectively created serves as a safe space and home for us to just be, celebRate our being.”
Victoria Secret models are ever so thin, and Kazakova said this makes the average person feel unattractive.
“I was talking with my friends like, ‘Oh my gosh, it makes me feel horrible.’ A lot of people feel unattractive after watching it.”
Kazakova told the Post that women flew in from around the world to participate in the flash-mob-style event. “I know that there are people flying from Italy, London, Melbourne, and Canada,” said Kazakova, 33, said. “I think somebody is trying to bring their mom and grandmothers.”
Countering the rigid competition and standards super models must endure to be selected, Kazakova opened her event up to all comers.
…and it showed.
And while it’s a tough call, a sampling of what was took place on the actual runway seemed to edge out the guerrilla-style fashion show outside:
