Broward County elections supervisor Brenda Snipes has returned.
In a stunning announcement Saturday, the scandal-prone Democrat official rescinded her scheduled Jan. 4 resignation and vowed to remain at her post for however long is necessary to defend herself.
Why? To battle Florida Gov. Rick Scott, who had responded to her unexpected resignation by suspending her over her “multiple violations of Florida law, incompetence and neglect of duty.”
“After a series of inexcusable actions, it’s clear that there needs to be an immediate change in Broward County and taxpayers should no longer be burdened by paying a salary for a supervisor of elections who has already announced resignation,” he said in a statement last Friday.

The Florida governor appointed Peter Antonacci, an attorney who serves as the head of a local economic development agency, to serve in Snipes’ abandoned post until a replacement is assigned.
A day after Scott’s announcement, Snipes and her attorney responded by holding a press conference to rescind her upcoming resignation and announce she’ll be “fighting this to the very end.”
“We believe these actions are malicious, we believe that the allegations that are set forth in the governor’s executive order are done for the purposes of embarrassing Dr. Snipes — embarrassing her and tarnishing her record, and we will be fighting this,” attorney Burnadette Norris-Weeks said.
“In addition to that, Dr. Snipes hereby rescinds her resignation that was set forth which would have been effective on the fourth of January.”

According to Norris-Weeks, Snipes’ motivation for rescinding her resignation are twofold: She’s worried her replacement will corrupt the elections process, and she wants to protect her reputation.
“Norris-Weeks expressed concern that the appointment of Antonacci was being done in order to push ahead with questionable actions ahead of the next presidential election,” the Sun-Sentinel reported.
Whereas Snipes’ history is littered with examples of incompetence, malfeasance and outright corruption, Antonacci’s record is one of excellence and justice.
“In private practice, Pete has represented public- and private-sector clients. He volunteered his time and talents by serving two terms on Florida’s Ethics Commission and on federal and state judicial nominating commissions,” retired Leon County Judge Tim Harley wrote about him three years ago.
“He served four years on the North Florida Water Management District Board where he used knowledge gained from his earning a master’s degree at Florida State’s Department of Urban and Regional Planning. In 2012, he left his law firm to serve as state attorney for Palm Beach County, managing 350 employees.”
Some suspect the real reason for Snipes’ sudden reversal is that she wants to protect the $71,000 she had been slated to receive as an annual pension as per her time in the elections office.

While it remains unclear whether Scott’s suspension will indeed affect Snipes’ pension, her decision to waste the state government’s time and money to fight for a pension that many feel she doesn’t even deserve isn’t sitting well with many.

They should take her pension away. She abused her power in her position. She should not be paid for that, for the rest of her life. On top of it, if she has a husband he will collect her pension after her death whenever that day comes. Shut her down all the way.

Because of Snipes’ incompetence, it took weeks for Broward County to certify the results of the 2018 midterm elections last month. During that time ballots were seen being transported in private vehicles in the dead of night, and good ballots were seen being mixed in with bad ballots.
