President Donald Trump got into an intense exchange with CNN correspondent Jim Acosta during a news conference Wednesday afternoon.
“I tell you what, CNN should be ashamed of itself, having you working for them,” the president told Acosta at one point. “You are a rude, terrible person. You shouldn’t be working for CNN.”
Acosta questioned why Trump calls the migrant caravan marching on the southern border “an invasion,” noting that they are still hundreds of miles from the border.
Trump replied that he considers it an invasion and Acosta disputed that assessment, attempting to debate the president over what the caravan actually is.
Again Trump said he considered it invasion, stressing that they had a “difference of opinion.”
After going back and forth a bit on the issue, Trump’s patience was wearing thin.
“Honestly, I think you should let me run the country and you run CNN, and if you did it well, your ratings would be much better,” he told Acosta.
When the president tried to move on to another question, the reporter simply refuse to surrender the microphone and tried to ask a question about Russia.
“That’s enough,” Trump said, to no avail.
When an aide tried to retrieve the microphone, Acosta tightened his grip and pulled it closer to him, looking much like a child refusing to relinquish a toy.
“That’s enough!” the president stressed again. “Put down the mic.”
After Trump walks away from the podium, Acosta finally surrenders the mic and they move on, but the reporter continued to pop off, prompted another response from the president.
“You are a rude person,” Trump angrily told Acosta. “The way you treat [White House Press Secretary] Sarah Huckabee is horrible and the way you treat others is horrible. You shouldn’t treat people that way.”
The president then called on NBC News reporter Peter Alexander, who defended his colleague, calling Acosta a “diligent reporter.”
“Well, I’m not a big fan of yours either,” Trump told Alexander. “You aren’t the best.”
Again Acosta sprang to his feet and began spouting off.
“Just sit down, please,” Trump told him. “When you report fake news, which CNN does a lot, you are the enemy of the people.”
Wow.
