Calls for Rosenstein to be fired escalate with signs he’ll slow walk Trump’s order to declassify docs

Fox News legal analyst Gregg Jarrett said Tuesday in an editorial if Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein defies President Donald Trump’s order to declassify certain documents related to the Russian collusion probe, he should be fired.

On Monday, the president ordered the declassification of several key documents, to include 21 pages of an application for a renewed surveillance warrant against former campaign aide Carter Page, signed by Rosenstein, and text messages from disgraced FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, Fox News reported.

Citing transparency, a favorite theme of the previous administration, Trump stood by the order in comments made Tuesday in the Oval Office.

“This is a witch hunt,” the president said. “It’s a terrible witch hunt and it’s hurt our country and the things that have been found over the last couple of weeks about text messages back and forth are a disgrace to our nation. And I want transparency and so does everybody else.”

Jarrett reminds us that the surveillance of Carter Page “was based on an unverified ‘dossier’ that was funded by Hillary Clinton’s campaign and composed by a British spy, Christopher Steele, who was fired by the FBI for lying.”

The legal analyst wrote that FISA judges “were deceived and defrauded” in not being informed of this “critical information.”

He also noted that Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., the ranking minority member of the House Intelligence Committee, “claims that the current FBI Director, Robert Wray, and Deputy Attorney General, Rod Rosenstein, have proclaimed that the president’s declassification order ‘crossed a red line.'”

“While Schiff is notorious for hyperbole, his assertion of a ‘red line’ is rather stunning,” Jarrett wrote. “Does it mean Rosenstein and Wray will defy the president’s direct order and continue to obstruct lawful subpoenas issued by congress?  If so, they should be fired for rank insubordination.”

If not, they “may endeavor to delay or ‘slow roll’ the release of documents hoping that the political winds may shift or that control of Congress itself will change hands in the upcoming election,” Jarrett suggested.

The concern over intelligence agencies slow-rolling the process is very real.

Fox News’ Catherine Herridge noted as much Tuesday while reporting the process of declassifying these documents has already began, with the first items perhaps being released as soon as Friday.

“However, two congressional sources are emphasizing that the declassification review should not be long and drawn out, despite concerns over protecting sources and methods,” Herridge reported. “The congressional sources said they feared that ‘process’ was being used to frustrate the president’s order and unnecessarily slow-roll the public release of the records.”

As for firing Rosenstein, Judicial Watch’s Chris Farrell, director of investigations and research, appeared on Fox Business Network’s “Lou Dobbs Tonight” to agree with the assessment made by Jarrett.

“Rosenstein needs to go,” Farrell said. “This is the perfect opportunity given the context, and given the amount of information that’s going to be revealed, that he is actively suppressing this criminal conspiracy.”

“Now is the time for Mr. Rosenstein to be fired, and I think that this documentation, when released, will only confirm and compound that,” he added.

Farrell suggested the ” deep state political operatives will drag their feet to kick it past the election,” urging that time is of the essence.

“They have already processed all these records,” he said. “They can release them, all of them, within a week if they wanted to. And that’s the key.”
