Sen. Marco Rubio has asked the Justice Department to investigate whether former Secretary of State John Kerry violated federal laws in a series of meetings with the Iranian Foreign Minister to try to preserve the Iran nuclear deal.
The Florida Republican sent a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Tuesday that was obtained exclusively by Fox News. Citing the Logan Act and Foreign Agents Registration Act, Rubio said Americans “deserve to know that U.S. laws are enforced regardless of any individual’s past position.”

According to Fox News, the Logan Act prohibits unauthorized personnel to negotiate with a foreign government in relation to disputes with the U.S., and the Foreign Agents Registration Act requires persons or companies acting on behalf of foreign governments, political parties or individuals to disclose details of their interactions.
Kerry admitted in an interview last week with radio host Hugh Hewitt that he has met with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif “three or four times” in recent months to conduct sensitive diplomacy. The diplomat was Kerry’s negotiating partner in the nuclear deal that President Trump has since rejected.
The Trump administration was not aware of the meetings and the president has been very critical of the former Obama administration official.

Kerry told Hewitt that he was not coaching the Iranians on how to handle the Trump administration, but “rather tried to elicit from him (Zarif) what Iran might be willing to do in order to change the dynamic in the Middle East for the better,” according to Fox News.
Rubio backed Trump’s decision to back out on what the senator called a “bad deal.”
Social media users were skeptical if Sessions would respond favorably, but many are convinced that Kerry is guilty as the “treason” word was bandied about freely.
