The International Criminal Court has announced an investigation into alleged U.S. war crimes in Afghanistan and White House National Security Adviser John Bolton was not too amused as he shared the Trump administration’s get-tough response.
Bolton said the US “will not cooperate” with the investigation and vowed to use “any means necessary to protect our citizens and those of allies from unjust prosecution by this illegitimate court,” Fox News reported.
“The International Criminal Court unacceptably threatens American sovereignty and U.S. national security interests,” Bolton said on Monday in a speech to the Federalist Society in Washington, DC.
And Bolton was taking no prisoners.
“We will let the ICC die on its own, after all, for all intents and purposes, the ICC is already dead to us,” he said.
Repercussions could include tariffs and prosecution of ICC judges and lawyers in U.S. courts, as well as sanctioning the global tribunal’s funds in the U.S. financial system.
The ICC, hampered by major nations like the U.S., Russia and China refusing to join, was created in 2002 and while it has filed charges against dozens of suspects, just eight defendants have been convicted, according to Fox News.
Bolton’s rebuke comes after the Trump administration announced the closure of the Palestine Liberation Organization in Washington — the State Department said it was because there were “no direct and meaningful negotiations with Israel.”
“The United States supports a direct and robust peace process, and we will not allow the ICC, or any other organization, to constrain Israel’s right to self-defense,” Bolton reiterated.
