A Southern California lawyer is feeling the heat over a Facebook post that was not very complimentary of Asian Americans.
Titled “The Asians that took over Orange County,” attorney Christina Ignatius made a comparison between Asian-Americans in the area and those featured in the hit film, “Crazy Rich Asians.”
“My friend said that there is something coming out called Crazy Rich Asians,” wrote Ignatius. “It reminds me of all the Asians who flooded into Orange County and then took over our mall at South Coast Plaza.”
She also called Asian-Americans “rice rockets,” and suggested those not smart enough to become doctors and lawyers are told by “Tiger Moms” to marry doctors and lawyers.
Ignatius remarked on the poor driving skills of Asians in the post, as well.
“They will drive their Mercedes in the carpool lane and then cut across 5 lanes to get over to the mall, as if your car next to them didn’t even matter, ” she wrote. “That’s why we have the term ‘driving like an Asian.'”
The post would be deleted, but not before Ignatius was hit with plenty of criticism.
“Seriously?! Wow! Ethics violation? Hope everyone reports this one to the State Bar of California. Why should someone have a license to practice law if they’re a racist?! I wouldn’t be giving any money to this woman,” one Facebook user wrote, according to NextSkark.
“I am saddened by your racist, insensitive and simply unacceptable post,” she wrote. “It’s hard to imagine that an attorney in Orange County would make such an ignorant post in 2018.”
The attorney brushed off her post when contacted by the Orange County Register, insisting that she did not deserve the criticism and threats that rained down on her — Asian American or Pacific Islanders account for more than 11 percent of the state’s population.
“If you have no malintent, you didn’t do anything wrong,” Ignatius told The Register, insisting that the post was “meant as a joke” for her Facebook friends.
“They (Asians) poke fun at themselves,” she added. “I love them. I work with them. I love their culture. That’s why I love ‘The Things Asian Moms Say.’“
