It’s come to this in post-Obama America.
In response to pressure from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Nabisco has redesigned the packaging of its Barnum’s Animals crackers.
…so that the animals in the drawings depicted on the box are roaming free.

PETA has been protesting the use of animals in circuses for more than 30 years and wrote a letter to Mondelez International, the parent company of Nabisco, a couple of years ago urging a redesign, according to The Associate Press.
“Given the egregious cruelty inherent in circuses that use animals and the public’s swelling opposition to the exploitation of animals used for entertainment, we urge Nabisco to update its packaging in order to show animals who are free to roam in their natural habitats,” the letter stated.
The new design features a zebra, elephant, lion, giraffe and gorilla side-by-side in an open grassland, replacing the old artwork showing the animals being in cages, with the box appearing as a boxcar carrying them to the circus.
Well known blogger David Burge may have summed things up best with this rather succinct tweet: “today in Our Stupid F*cking Planet.”

Since corporations are so easily brow-beaten into action these days, Burge followed up on his tweet with a suggestion of his own: “I’m going to petition Nabisco to make Activist Crackers.”

While this may the latest reason why we must take the left seriously, as well known social media user Matt Walsh sarcastically suggested, it did provide a little levity in the wasteland known as Twitter.
Here’s a sampling of responses:
PETA cant save real animals… so they've moved on to protecting cookies. pic.twitter.com/LA1owSlM9H

My niece is unsure about the new cage-free animal crackers! The new box shows animals roaming free rather than behind bars @phl17 pic.twitter.com/7RtW7iK4RH

Keep animal crackers in their cages. I don’t want my five year old exposed to this: pic.twitter.com/oqtATlThqx

Wonder if PETA ever thought about how the circus and zoo’s brought about animal awareness and fondness introducing many species to people that otherwise wouldn’t have a clue existed. Far greater achievement than PETA could muster slamming animal crackers.
