Larry Nassar, the ex-USA Gymnastics team doctor who was sentenced to life imprisonment for molesting more than 265 young female gymnasts, has been moved out of federal prison after he was allegedly assaulted.

Inmates allegedly assaulted Nassar after he was released into the general population of the United States Penitentiary, a high-security prison in Tucson, Arizona, according to court documents filed by his lawyer in July petitioning to appeal his sentence. He is currently being held at a federal transfer facility in Oklahoma City, according to Reuters.

One of Nassar’s attorneys Jacqueline McCann said in the appeal that Ingham County Judge Rosemarie Aquilina encouraged retaliation against Nassar for his crimes with her rhetoric during the trial.

“The judge herself openly lamented that she could not impose cruel and unusual punishment upon the defendant, indicated her expectation that he would be harmed in prison, without condemning it, and finally proclaimed, with apparent relish, that she was signing his ‘death warrant,’” McCann wrote in the appeal, according The Detroit News.

It is unclear which facility Nassar will be moved to, but experts speculate he could be moved to another high-security prison in Florida or Indiana.

“This is a difficult case for the Bureau of Prisons in that Nassar’s case is highly publicized and he will be known to the inmate population no matter which facility is selected,” Ralph Miller, a retired Bureau of Prisons employee who specialized in cases involving sex offenders, told The Detroit News. “Due to this, the Bureau of Prisons is likely to utilize all available high security facilities prior to reviewing him for placement in a medium with in excess of 30 years to still be served.”
