U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters’ sudden relevancy is a direct result of her obsession with resisting President Donald Trump and his agenda, with the two factors feeding off one another.
An ideological resistance that takes precedent over polices that appear to benefit the American people, such as the Republican Party’s tax reform package, which the batty California Democrat called a “tax scam” during an appearance on MSNBC this weekend. The smear coming as she vowed that it will be “reversed” should her party regain the majority in Congress this fall.
Attributing the booming economy to Trump’s predecessor, former President Barack Obama, Waters expressed concern — for the first time ever? — about the deficit, as a result of the tax bill.
“Of course, the economy has improved, and of course he would like to take credit for all of that,” she told MSNBC anchor David Gura. “But in the final analysis, when this country understands and feels what has been done with the tax scam and what that’s going to do for our deficit in this country, it’s going to be reversed.”
(House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi might be surprised to learn that Waters is now setting the legislative agenda for the party.)
Waters, who’s managed to pass just three bills in nearly three decades in Congress, then flipped reality on its head, claimed that the policies driving the economy will “undermine” it.
“A combination of the tax scam and the tariffs will undermine all that has been done in the economy that was started by Obama,” she said.
When you consider that Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass, who suggested that a 50 to 90 percent personal income tax rate for Americans is not out of the question, made a promise last week on CNBC to repeal Trump’s tax cuts if Democrats regain control of Congress, you can better understand that Waters gets her talking points from cable news.

That Waters represents California, a border state, was all the reason Gura needed to have her unleash on Trump over a tweet from the president on Sunday threatening to shut down the federal government if Congress — see Democrats — fails to move on his immigration priorities, to include a border wall.
“You know, this president is a bully and he will try to intimidate all of us,” she said.
Waters could not have been more clear that the Democratic effort to oppose a border wall is all about preventing Trump from following through on a campaign promise.
“He is not going to shut down anything,” she declared. “As a matter of fact, people will remember that he said he was going to build this wall and he was going to make Mexico pay for the wall. They said they weren’t going to pay for anything. Now he wants the American citizens to pay for this wall.”
“American citizens are not going to pay for this wall, he is not going to shut down the government and we are not going to be intimidated by his bluffing and bullying,” said the lawmaker labeled as the most corrupt member of Congress on four different occasions by Citizens For Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.
