Avenatti and Dershowitz go another heated round over porn lawyer’s questionable ethics

A discussion Friday on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360°” between liberal Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz and attorney Michael Avennati quickly grew heated after Dershowitz again questioned his counterpart’s ethics. Except this time even host Anderson Cooper took part.

Of concern to Dershowitz was how exactly Avenatti, the attorney for porn star Stormy Daniels, had known beforehand about the tape that President Donald Trump’s former longtime attorney Michael Cohen released this week.

Earlier this week Cohen released a tape to CNN of Trump speaking with him about some sort of “payment” presumably meant for former Playboy model Karen McDougal. What Dershowitz found disturbing was the fact that Avenatti had been touting this and other tapes for weeks. He’d also claimed to be in possession of some of these tapes.

“It’s hard to imagine how he could have lawfully gotten a hold of those tapes,” Dershowitz said Friday. “He did according to press reporters have a conversion with Mr. Cohen at a restaurant.”

“And that raises some questions because, you know, you’re not allowed to speak to somebody who is counseled, who has a lawyer, and ask him, ‘Do you want to work together to hurt Trump?’ So, I don’t know whether that occurred. But if it did occur, I think Michael has to do some explaining.”

These remarks triggered Avennati, provoking him into redirecting the discussion from his ethics  (or the lack thereof) to his alleged propensity for issuing psychic-grade predictions. Apparently, he was very impressed with himself for “predicting” Cohen would eventually release his tapes. He also accused Dershowitz of getting personal with him.

“Alan, let me say this. You keep saying you don’t want the get personal with me, and you keep getting personal with me, including on Fox the other night,” Avenatti replied.

“I’m going to tell you, I don’t appreciate it. I’m willing to put up my track record over the last six months in this case up against yours any day of the week. I have been very, very accurate in my predictions, in the statements that I’ve made, and the facts. And the fact of the matter is on Sunday, you expressed considerable doubt as to whether I knew what I was talking about.”

Dershowitz had been doubtful about whether tapes really existed. Those doubts evaporated after Cohen released one tape this week. But this still doesn’t explain how Avenatti personally knew about the tapes before they were released to the media.

Even host Anderson Cooper was disturbed by this discrepancy, particularly after Avenatti had the gall to tout Cohen’s latest claim that Trump had approved a meeting with a group of Russians at Trump Tower in June 2016.

“This information on the Trump Tower meeting, that’s not the best information Michael Cohen has. I can assure you of that,” Avenatti said, prompting both Cooper and Dershowitz to simultaneously ask, “How do you know that?’

“Again, I’m not going to tell you how I know these things,” Avenatti replied after first fumbling over his words.

“Well, you may have to tell the ethics committee then,” Dershowitz replied, again triggering Avenatti.

This time Avenatti not only accused of Dershowitz of being a veritable know-nothing, but also mocked him for the bullying, harassment and ostracization he’s faced at Martha’s Vineyard.

Listen:

For a man who repeatedly demanded that the discussion not be “personal,” Avenatti seems like a guy who could really use a dictionary.
