With liberals clutching their pearls over the possibility that President Donald Trump could revoke the security clearances of a few former Obama administration officials, House Speaker Paul Ryan offered a perfect analysis.
“I think he’s trolling people, honestly,” Ryan told reporters Tuesday during a press conference.
The amused Wisconsin Republican then noted, accurately, that security clearances are in the purview of the executive branch and that some of the people Trump has in mind have already lost their security clearances.
Effectively running interference for the anti-Trump brigade, NBC reporter Kasie Hunt characterized the action as targeting political opponents, asking if this was something a “banana republic” would do.
“I think he’s just trolling people,” Ryan reiterated.
The latest controversy comes after White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Trump is “looking to take away” the security clearances of a number of former senior national security and intelligence officials.
Of course, when you have a former director of the FBI acting as the campaign arm of the Democratic Party, taking to Twitter to actively encourage Americans to vote for the party, as James Comey did last week, you can better understand why Trump may be concerned.
Or, if a former director of the CIA viciously attacks a sitting president in what may be described as a personal vendetta, as we now see John Brennan doing.
Naturally, the anti-Trump media is up in arms, as seen from Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin in response to Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., calling on Trump to revoke Brennan’s clearance after the unhinged ex-spy chief accused the president of treason after last week’s Helsinki press conference.
Rubin had the audacity to imply that it would be a violation of the First Amendment if the president followed through — it’s not.
