Rand Paul files civil suit against attacker, seeking damages and more

Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky filed a civil suit against the man who attacked him in 2017, seeking damages, attorney fees and a permanent no-contact order.

The lawsuit, filed Monday, claims that Rene Boucher’s attack made Paul more susceptible to “injury and disease; and that he has been deprived of his enjoyment of life.”

Paul suffered six broken ribs, pneumonia and other issues as a result of the attack, leaving him hospitalized for two weeks before he was able to return to Capitol Hill.

The lawsuit is also asking that the court issue a permanent no-contact order because the Paul family believes Boucher will continue “the pattern of stalking and harassment.”

Boucher was convicted of assaulting Paul and was sentenced to 30 days in prison on June 15 and ordered to pay a $10,000 fine.

The attack was reportedly due to Boucher being upset that Paul blew some leaves into his lawn, resulting in Boucher blindsiding Paul while he was doing lawn maintenance.

Boucher’s lawyer, Matt Baker, told Bowling Green News that he hoped the suit will be “resolved as efficiently as possible.”

“To the best of my knowledge, Sen. Paul has not suffered any loss of any income and doesn’t appear that he will in the future,””Baker said. “It was established at the sentencing hearing that he does not have any out-of-pocket medical expenses in this case, and at some point after the incident he told Fox News in an on-camera interview that he has not taken any prescription pain medication, and so all that is to say we’re going to defend this civil suit just like we would any other and see if we can get it resolved as efficiently as possible.”
