After a heated interview with Corey Stewart, a Republican candidate running for the U.S. Senate in Virginia, CNN’s Chris Cuomo suggested his father, the former governor of New York, Mario Cuomo, would have “rearranged” Stewart’s face.
Cuomo’s talk of physical violence prompted a supportive reply from colleague Don Lemon during a handoff, who implied that if the Republican candidate was “in the same room with you — well, both of us…,” before leaving the rest of the sentence dangling on what they might have done.
Cuomo was responding to Stewart claiming Mario Cuomo had made anti-Semitic remarks, a comment that came after the CNN host questioned the candidate’s dubious association with others. Cuomo displayed a photo of Stewart standing in front of a Confederate flag, which has been condemned in post-Obama America — despite the flag being seen as little more than a symbol of Southern heritage for so many.
The greater goal for Cuomo, of course, was to link Stewart to President Trump, after the president took to Twitter to congratulate him for winning the GOP primary.
“Congratulations to Corey Stewart for his great victory for Senator from Virginia. Now he runs against a total stiff, Tim Kaine, who is weak on crime and borders, and wants to raise your taxes through the roof. Don’t underestimate Corey, a major chance of winning!” Trump tweeted.
Stewart, who was giving as well as he got, replied to Cuomo’s line of questioning by bringing Cuomo’s father into the mix.
“By the way, your own father said anti-Semitic things. Did you ever condemn him?” Stewart said. “That’s true!”
“Oh, please,” Cuomo fired back, getting very personal. “My father is dead and buried and was 10 times the man you’ll ever be on your best day!”
Stewart told Cuomo he never wants to “condemn the extremism on your own side of the aisle.”
“There is none on my side of the aisle,” the CNN host countered. “My aisle is the truth.”
Stewart is no stranger to violent rhetoric, as seen in a tweet he posted Wednesday,
“Virginians wanted someone to kick
@timkaine’s teeth in. I’m honored to have been selected for such a high honor,” he tweeted.
