That must have hit a nerve: Chelsea Clinton responds to stranger who morphed her into deformed Howdy Doody

Well, that must have hit a nerve.

Chelsea Clinton took to Twitter Tuesday to respond to a social media user with well under 100 followers who thinks she looks like Howdy Doody.

In what proved to be a misguided attempt to turn lemons into lemonade, the former first daughter tweeted: “Thanks to Richard & all the people on @Twitter who’ve compared me to Howdy Doody, I now know a bit about him, including that he stood up to bullies & believed in being kind to animals. I’m always happy to be on the side of allyship & kindness. Thanks again!”

Unless, of course, the goal is draw more attention — and sympathy — toward herself.

Either way, by responding to the tweet, Clinton only assured that the accompanying photo would go viral:

For today’s generation, “Howdy Doody” was the name of a popular children’s show that aired from 1947 to 1960.

The NBC show featured host Buffalo Bob Smith and puppet characters such as Dilly Dally and Phineas T. Bluster, along with the show’s namesake, Howdy Doody.

Clinton’s reply prompted a tidal wave of supportive tweets complimenting her for responding with class. Tweets that held her up as … Wonder Woman.

And the same crowd who clutched their pearls over the comparison also engaged in some photo comparisons of their own:

But, in the end — pun intended — there are worse things to be compared to than the lovable Howdy Doody character.
