Whose side are you on in the huge issue of globalism vs. American nationalism? Do you believe America should push aside its own national interests and sovereignty, and give other nations the power to make decisions over parts of our future? Or not?
Donald Trump has become the champion of American nationalism and exceptionalism. He believes in the American Idea, in conserving principles that have proven to be timeless because they are true. Trump does not buy the creed of the global “elites”, who think that a world government with power over nations will cure the world’s ills, and that an army of central bureaucrats can make things work.
We just saw globalism on display with the skirmish at the G-7 summit meeting, where six other industrialized democracies don’t like it that Trump is calling their hand over international trade. These nations have been taking advantage of the U.S. for decades, and now America finally has a leader who says “No more”. Like children caught with their hands in the cookie jar, these allies are now wailing over getting caught. Too bad—the jig is up. The U.S. has had too many dollars pouring out of our country, into the pockets of other nations, with too little currency flowing to us. As Trump put it, “the U.S. is like a piggy bank that everybody is robbing”.
This is protectionist talk, but what’s wrong with that? It’s refreshing and productive to have a leader who focuses on protecting America from the world’s financial and trade vultures. Here is the other lesson being learned by foreign leaders: If you’re a nation’s leader and you decide to make a foolish public statement slamming Trump about trade tariffs, you’d better expect a political knife in your ribs from Trump. He’s a classic counterpuncher and he doesn’t fool around with niceties; Canada’s Trudeau double-crossed Trump and stabbed America in the back, all so he could make a public statement for political consumption. Canada will pay a price for Trudeau’s misstep because Canada has far more to lose in trade negotiations than America does.
Getting back to the dangerous issue, we see the global elites hard at work these days, trying to strengthen the United Nations, the World Court and the European Union; trying to redistribute the wealth of the world’s successful nations to the world’s dictatorships and to those nations with governments that don’t work— trying to pick the world’s winners and losers.
Globalists push an agenda that would bring all the inhabitants of earth under one central, worldwide state. Some call it the “New World Order”. This agenda encourages Americans to embrace a “world view”, and reject an “American view”. Have you felt the growing suspicion that something is very wrong and that you are being lied to by national politicians and the federal bureaucrats? Have you grown concerned that too many TV talking heads are spouting untruths and that our children are being propagandized by college professors? If your answer is yes, you have run into the successes of the Globalist Agenda.
Donald Trump burst onto a political stage where too many American politicians and media giants bought the idea that the U.S. should no longer stand as a bulwark of capitalism, democracy and freedom around the world. Trump campaigned on putting “America First”. He spoke to record-setting crowds and told them that, for decades, we have been taken advantage of. American generosity to other nations was legendary. We forked over trillions for foreign aid. And yet our largesse has not been appreciated. Before Trump, just 25 percent of Americans were satisfied with the direction the country was headed. Then Trump came along and told us we should have confidence and pride in our values and accomplishments on the world stage. Further, he abhorred the system of international trade which has led to gargantuan trade deficits for the U.S.
Yes, globalists mistakenly, sneeringly refer to America First as isolationist. But “America First” does not mean “America Alone”. It means “fair trade”, it means we center economic policy on U.S. national interests, and we hold countries accountable to the rules. “A prosperous America benefits the world.”
