Former President Barrack Obama wondered if he pushed America too far after Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election, according to a book written by Obama’s longtime adviser Ben Rhodes.

Obama could not comprehend Trump’s victory and questioned himself and his work as president not long after the election in a motorcade in Lima, Peru, according to Rhodes.

“What if we were wrong?,” Obama asked aides riding in the motorcade with him, according to Rhodes book, “The World as It Is.” “Maybe we pushed too far,” Obama continued. “Maybe people just want to fall back into their tribe.”

Although Obama’s aides tried to assure him he would have won the election against Trump, he reportedly was not convinced. “Sometimes I wonder whether I was 10 or 20 years too early,” he reportedly told his aides.

The book also says Obama called Trump a “cartoon” figure and compared himself to a character from “The Godfather” movie after handing over the office to Trump, reportedly saying “I feel like Michael Corleone. I almost got out.”

Rhodes’ book is set to release on June 5 and will detail his experience working closely with Obama throughout his presidency.
