Gowdy: ‘Spygate’ had ‘nothing to do with Donald Trump’

GOP Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina said that after participating in a May 24 Department of Justice briefing on President Donald Trump’s alleged “Spygate,” he is now convinced the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election has “nothing to do with Donald Trump,” he told Fox News’ Martha MacCallum Tuesday.

Gowdy, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, praised senior personnel at the DOJ and Trump appointees FBI Director Chris Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. Gowdy is “even more convinced that the FBI did exactly what my fellow citizens would want them to do when they got the information they got,” he said.

Conversely, Gowdy slammed House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Ranking Member Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California, and said he is “doing a disservice” to America by not making it clear that Trump is “not the target” of the investigation.

The congressman from South Carolina was one of two House Republicans who reviewed “highly classified documents” regarding whether or not the FBI planted a spy in the 2016 Trump campaign to alter the outcome of the elections.

Gowdy defended Trump. “[Trump said] ‘I didn’t collude with Russia, but if anyone connected with my campaign did, I want you to investigate it.’ It strikes me that that’s exactly what the FBI was doing,” Gowdy said.
